Present Simple Rule: We use the present simple for things which happen regularly

or which are always true.

With I, you, we and they we use the base form of the verb. With he, she and it we add –s

Remember this for he/she/it: 1. Verb ending in -s sound

Present ContiNUous Rule: We use the present continuous to talk about things that are

happening at or around the time of speaking.

We form the present continuous with the present tense of be + verb + ing.

Vorm: ◦ vorm van “to be” (am / is / are) + hele werkwoord + -ING

Wanneer gebruik je het?◦ Tegenwoordige tijd; iets is aan de gang of bezig.

Waaraan herken je het? (signaalwoorden)◦ (right) now, at the moment, at present, look, listen, currently.

Vraagzinnen:◦ Am/are/is + onderwerp + werkwoord + ING

Is he walking to school now?

Ontkennende zinnen:◦ Am not / aren’t / isn’t+ werkwoord + ING

He isn’t walking to school now, he is walking to the bus stop.

Als een werkwoord op een -e eindigt, dan vervalt de -e als ING wordt toegevoegd.

Have --> having NOT haveing!! Make --> making Drive --> driving

Sommige werkwoorden komen zelden voor in de vorm van een present continuous:

Believe – know – understand – remember – want – need – mean – like – hate.

Like + -ing Rule: We often use the –ing form after the verbs of

liking, for example like, love, enjoy, and hate.

I hate cycling to school in the rain.

Remember: 1. If the verb ends in –e, we drop the –e before –ing.

◦ Make --> making

2. If a short verb ends in a vowel + consonant, we double the last letter before –ing

◦ hit --> hitting

Adverbs of frequency Rule: Adverbs of frequency come after the verb be,

but before other verbs.

RuleIn English, we can count nouns: 1 apple, 2 bananas,

3 carrots, etc. We call these words countable nouns.

There are some words we can’t count, for example: food and fruit. These words have no plural. We call them uncountable nouns.
