• Body Mass Index (BMI): – A ratio of weight to height
– Can be used to assess whether your weight calls within its healthy range
– BMI charts take into account age and gender, since males and females grow at different rates

• BMI= [weight in lbs / (height in inches)2] x 703
• Steps to calculate BMI:– Multiply your height (in inches) by your height
(square it)– Divide your weight (in pounds) by your height
squared– Multiply the result by 703.

• Direct ways to measure BMI:– Skinfold Calipers:
• several measurements are taken at different locations on the body
– Bod Pod:• Subject enters a chamber, mass and volume are measured by
air displacement… a VERY accurate but expensive method
– Hydrostatic Weighing:• One of the most common methods, done underwater and
measures percentage of fat to lean muscle (weighed outside and then underwater)
– Bioelectric Impedence Analysis• Electrical current is sent through the body. Changes in the
current are measured and used to calculate lean body mass and body fat.
