COMPETENCY 9

By: Mary Moore

Competency 9

Respond to contexts that shape practice.

Description

Social workers are informed, resourceful, and proactive in responding to evolving organizational, community, and societal contexts at all levels of practice. Social workers recognize that the context of practice is dynamic, and use knowledge and skill to respond proactively.

Generalist Practice Behaviors 9.1

Continuously discover, appraise, and attend to changing locales, populations, scientific and technological developments, and emerging societal trends to provide relevant services.

Example: At Scotland Memorial Hospital we have at least one luncheon a month where various groups come in and teach us about who they are and what they do. Ex: Healthkeeperz.

9.2

Provide leadership in promoting sustainable changes in service delivery and practice to improve the quality of social services.

Example: The case managers at Scotland Memorial Hospital meet frequently to discuss how we can better serve our patients and how we can ensure that they receive the services that they need. Ex: Assess patients within two days, see every patient at least once everyday, call patients after discharge to ensure that their services were delivered, i.e. home health, DME.
