THE VOYAGER PROGRAM TAKES OFF!
Voyager 1
In 1977, the Voyager 1 launched from Cape Canaveral. Was followed shortly by it’s sister craft, Voyager 2The mission was to study the Outer Planets of our Solar System

THE VOYAGER 1…• Is made up of 65,000 different parts
• Can accurately take a picture of a newspaper headline from 1 km. away
• Is designed to withstand the harsh conditions of outer space
• Carries a gold-plated copper record containing the “story” of our world

VOYAGER 1’S MILESTONES• In 1979, Voyager 1 passes by Jupiter
• In 1980, Voyager 1 passes by Saturn
• In 1990, Voyager 1 turns it’s camera backwards and takes a picture of the Earth (The famous “Pale Blue Dot” photograph)
• In 2012….Voyage 1 leaves the solar system?

VOYAGER 1 APPROACHES INTERSTELLAR SPACE
• In the middle of 2012, Voyager 1 saw a sharp increase of particles/sec
• This measurement meant that more radioactive particles were being directed at the Voyager
• This effectively helped scientists determine that Voyager had entered interstellar space
