BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES Wilmington Family YMCA 2016-2017 Afterschool Program Guide
Serving Students in Grades K-8
www.wilmingtonfamilyymca.org
WELCOME TO AFTERSCHOOL AT THE Y!
Thank you for choosing the Y! We are looking forward to the school year ahead at the Wilmington Family YMCA, and we are excited about the opportunity to be a part of you and your child’s lives this school year. At Afterschool, it is our aim to run a high quality program that is not only safe, but provides opportunities for children to have fun, be active, enhance education, explore new interests, and build relationships.
For our returning families, welcome back! Thank you for continuing to choose the Y to serve you and your family. To our new families, we welcome you to what we hope will be the first of many years together. As you navigate the waters of YMCA programs, please feel free to ask questions; we will do our best to provide assistance as soon as possible. Relationships are at the core of the Y, and we strive to strengthen relationships between children, parents, and our staff in everything we do.
In this guide, you will see that we offer afterschool programs for students in grades K-8, including those on a year round calendar, and we are serving more schools in New Hanover County than ever before; please take time to browse our guide, check out our offerings, and visit our website at www.wilmingtonfamilyymca.org/programs/youth-development/child-care to find out more. We encourage you to register early since Afterschool can fill to capacity, especially from those schools at which we offer transportation. We are very excited to see you this school year and hope you are ready to experience the best afterschool pro-gram yet!

REGISTRATION Registration is now open! Afterschool can fill up, especially from
the schools that we offer transportation, and we recommend
you sign up as soon as possible! There is a one-time $35
registration fee which is due when you register. For our
elementary, teacher workdays and holidays, and intercession
programs, registration and weekly fees are due the Wednesday
before the week your child attends; this allows us to ensure
proper staffing, supplies, snacks, and age-appropriate schedule
for those in attendance. For our Middle School program, month-
ly payments are due 5 days prior to the month that your child
attends; full monthly fees for the Middle School Program will be
collected August 26th through April 25 and covers the entire
school year. You can choose to register online at
www.wilmingtonfamilyymca.org or you may choose to register in
person at our Express Y located at 11 S. Kerr Ave., Wilmington,
NC 28403. The Express Y is open Monday through Thursday
from 5:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., Friday from 5:00 A.M. to 9:00
P.M., Saturday from 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M., and Sunday from
1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
FUN FOR EVERYONE At the Y, we think fun, new friends, positive role
models and great times should be available to every child.
That’s why we provide scholarships to families who need help
making Afterschool a reality.
If your family needs a little help to make Afterschool a reality,
scholarship forms are available at our Express Y, or online at
www.wilmingtonfamilyymca.org/join#pathways, and are kept
completely confidential.
Funds are made possible because of the generous donations
made through our Annual Giving Campaign. You can help send
a child to Afterschool by visiting our website and making a
tax-deductible online gift or by submitting a donation to our
Membership Desk at the Express Y.
YOU’RE IN GOOD HANDS Staff, as role models, are selected for sound judgment,
maturity, experience, enthusiasm, and creativity. All staff is
interviewed and goes through a complete background check
prior to being hired. Training occurs before the school year
and throughout the program to ensure attention to detail. All
staff is certified in CPR & First Aid.
Our programs focus on encouraging character growth through
care, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith. You can be
sure that our Y Afterschool staff is committed to developing
these traits through our camp activities, and that all activity
areas are well supervised.
Our average Elementary Afterschool staff to student ratio is
1:10 and no more than 1:15 for our Middle School program.
By selecting our YMCA Afterschool Program, you are investing
in a safe, fun, educational, and memorable experience for your
child.

New for the 2016-2017 school year, the Y
will serve students who attend school on a
year round calendar all year long! Like our
Traditional Elementary Afterschool Program,
we will offer Afterschool Programming every
day your child is in school.
In addition, during intercession breaks,
children have the opportunity to come to the
Y for a full day of activities where children
will learn new sports and games, create arts
and crafts, develop good sportsmanship, be
a part of a team, build new friendships, swim,
learn to be healthy, and much more! During
each week, we will take a field trip to Camp
Kirkwood on Wednesdays. Here, students will
have the opportunity to explore the great
outdoors, conquer low and high ropes
courses, zip-line over a lake, canoe, learn
archery, and engage in wildlife education. We
will also take local field trips on Fridays. Your
child will be active, have fun, and will want to
keep coming back day after day during their
intercession break!
Because of all the fun packed into one day,
including field trips, we ask that all students
arrive between 7:00 and 9:00 A.M. and are
picked up between 4:00 and 6:00 P.M. at the
Wilmington Family YMCA located at 2710
Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28403. Please
be sure to pack a lunch, swim suit, and water
bottle and mark all belongings with your
child’s name.

Do you crave to get faster, stronger, more
agile, or increase your balance? Do you play a
sport? Do you desire to push your fitness to
the next level? Do you wish to burn calories?
Do you simply want to be healthier? No matter
your goal, and no matter your current fitness
level, this program will benefit you!
Our program combines aerobic training with
strength training. Your body will get stronger,
your cardiovascular fitness will improve, you
will burn calories, and watch your body
transform as you obtain new fitness levels. We
love results, and we want to help you succeed
both academically and physically!
On a daily basis, students will have an
opportunity to complete homework, eat healthy
snacks, set short-term and long-term fitness
goals, identify fitness activities that will help
accomplish fitness goals, track fitness progress
in a monthly calendar, and compare what was
planned to what was accomplished.
Each Monday and Wednesday, students will be
bused directly to our Express Y where they will
participate in a TRX (total body resistance
exercise) class and use the cardio and
selectorized equipment (strength training)
under the guidance of trained staff. Students
will be bused back to the Y (2710 Market
Street) by 5:15 P.M. On Tuesdays, Thursdays,
and Fridays, fitness activities will include, on a
rotating basis, body weight training, high
intensity interval training (HIIT), and endurance
training utilizing the pool, gymnasium, and
track.
