manageandprotectbirdsthatmigrateinterna2onally—thefirstMigratoryBirdTreaty.InJuly,1918,theU.S.CongresspassedtheMigratoryBirdTreatyAct(MBTA),codifyingthistreatyintolaw.TheU.S.latersignedsimilartrea2eswithMexico(1936),Japan(1972),andRussia(1976). Thankfully,it’smorefashionablethesedaystowatchbirdsthantowearthem.Terribleasitwas,theindiscriminateslaughterofbirdsledtooneoftheU.S.’searliestandmostimportantenvironmentallaws.Statedmostsimply,theMBTAprotectsbirdsfrompeople:“…itisunlawfultopursue,hunt,take,capture,kill,possess,sell,purchase,barter,import,export,ortransportanymigratorybird,oranypart,nest,or

eggoranysuchbird,unlessauthorizedunderapermitissuedbytheSecretaryoftheInterior.”Morethan1,000speciescurrentlyenjoyprotec2onsundertheMBTA. Assummerbegins,it's/metoreflectonthepastyear.ItalwaysamazesmewhatBuenaVistaAudubonhasaccomplished.Justayearago,webecametheproudownersoftheAndyMauroPreserve.Followingthisexci/ngevent,webegantheprocessofcrea/ngaplanforrestoringthislandtona/vehabitatforthreatenedbirdspecies.TheU.S.MarineCorpsisourpartnerinthisproject. Ourbirdingprogramcon/nuestothrive,withnewbirdwalksthatexplorediversehabitatsthroughoutthecounty.Drawninbyourteamofdedicatedleaders,thecommunityispar/cipa/ngatrecordlevels.TheBVAS-hostedChristmasBirdCountwasanotherbigsuccess.SteveBrad’sspringbirdathonbroughtinrecorddona/ons.Eveninginforma/onalprogramstookmembersaroundthecountyandaroundtheworld. Throughstorytelling,craQs,andnatureeduca/on,ourvolunteersandguidescon/nuetoenrichthelivesoflocalchildren.Forovertwodecades,studentshavevisitedourcenterandwalkedourtrails.EverysooQenIrunintoyoungadultswhoremembervisi/ngthenaturecenterthroughoneoftheseclassesandarenowbringingtheirownkids.Becauseschoolshavelimitedfieldtripbudgets,BVAShasini/atedabusvoucherprogramtohelpcovercosts.Anotherschoolprogram,SharingourShores,hasentereditsthirdyear.IfyouvisitSouthPontoandSouthCardiffStateBeaches,youcanseethepostersouryoungpar/cipantshavemadetohelpeducatethepublicaboutprotec/ngvulnerableshorebirds. Specialeventscon/nuetobringthecommunitytogetherinourcelebra/onofnature.OurannualEndangeredSpeciesDayisachildren’seventthatcombinesfunwithlearning.Children’sauthor,JanellCannon,andTV’sChefAmandahostedlastfall'sbatapprecia/onprogram,enchan/ngafullhouseofkidsandparents.TheannualBirdhouseAuc/ononceagainbroughtincri/calfundstosupportournaturecenterandprovidedtheseTngforajoyfulcommunitygathering. Weaddressedneededrepairs:replacingthenorth-facingwall,fixingthebackwalkwaytoimprovedrainage,andre-finishingthehallwayfloor.UndertheguidanceofStudioAce,localchildrenpaintedthehallwaywithwildlife-themedart.Inaddi/ontomaintainingourownna/vegarden,theplantclubhasbeenhelpingelementaryschoolscreateandnurturegardensoftheirown. Weachievedamajorfundraisinggoal,raising$500,000forourNatureFundEndowment,establishedbybenefactorsBrianMalkandNancyHeiteljustovertwoyearsago.Thankstoallofyou,BuenaVistaraised$166,667towardsthiseffort,andBrianandNancymatchedthiswith$333,334.Con/nuingontheirgenerousfundraisingpath,BrianandNancyini/atedtheMalkNatureFundlastyear,gearedtoprovideannualsupporttoBVASandothernon-profitconserva/ongroupsinNorthCounty. LastNovember,wehiredMeganMarshalltohelpmanagetheMauroPreserve,andthe

WetlandsReserve(ourpropertyacrossthestreetfromthenaturecenter);shewillassistinothernaturecenter-relatedac/vi/es.LikeCenterManagerAnnefeSchneider,Meganhasaninexhaus/blelevelofenthusiasmforalltheworkwesendherway.
