The right fluid for your application
Introducing BASF
BASF is the worlds largest and most successful chemical company, with a history of innovation that stretches back almost 150 years. In that time, we have gained a hard-won reputation as a respected and trustworthy partner for many world leaders in industry.
In recent years, we have witnessed markets becoming ever more competitive while operating profits and margins are squeezed tighter than ever before. In response to this situation, we have increasingly been working as strategic partners with our customers, helping them to achieve maximum value from their operations.
This activity has included taking a proactive approach to problem solving, as well as pioneering new products that unlock potentially valuable new revenue streams.
Magnetorheological Fluids (MRFs)
Magnetorheological fluids are a good example of how BASF innovates to meet
new challenges and to open up new commercial opportunities.
MRFs are liquids displaying flow properties that can be adjusted by the introduction
of magnetic fields. As a result, their characteristics can be changed from free
flowing to solid in just milliseconds.
This property allows for the design of mechanical devices for adaptive force and
torque transmission to become highly-dynamic and cost efficient. In this way,
MR-devices can work at the extreme edge of efficiency, creating added value for
end-users and strengthening the margins of manufacturers.

Typical applications of MRFs
The unique flow properties of MRFs make them particularly
well suited to many applications that involve the adaptive
transmission of high forces. These typically include brakes,
couplings, dampers, mounts and bushings.
MRFs are not only able to transmit high forces, but can
change their physical properties extremely quickly, from liquid
to solid and back again in milliseconds. This enables these
fluids to perform tasks that were previously carried out by
mechanically complex components, thus simplifying design
and reducing costs.

Basonetic MRF
BASFs own range of magnetorheological fluids is known by
the trade name Basonetic. Basonetic MRF are manufac-
tured entirely by BASF, using our own Carbonyl Iron Powder
(CIP) ingredients in processes that we pioneered. This gives
us complete control of the product properties and enables us
to guarantee our customers a flawless product.
The other great advantage of maintaining full control of the
product properties and production process is that we can offer
individual formulations that precisely meet our customers
requirements. Depending on the working mode of the device for
which you need a MRF, we can formulate a perfect solution to
deliver exactly the results you want.
