Brake fluid is designed with a high boiling point, to withstand the extreme temperatures generated during braking. It has one major drawback - it absorbs moisture (it’s Hygroscopic). The more moisture in the brake fluid, the lower the boiling point. This increases the risk of "brake fade": under heavy driving conditions the brake fluid boils, turns to vapour, and the brake pedal goes straight to the floor with no braking action. This is known as "vapour-lock". That's why brake fluid is known as the "silent killer". It's a safety critical item, but how many drivers ever ask to get their brake fluid checked? A brake fluid test could potentially save them from accidents, and for the garage, it's a largely ignored service opportunity.
“The Silent Killer”
Brake Fluid Testing - The Service Opportunity
Table Illustrating Boiling Points of Braking Fluid in recent tests
UK surveys show that approximately 50% of vehicles on the road have brake fluid below the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS-116). This standard is noted on all containers of new brake fluid.
Recent tests carried out by independent service garages on behalf of car care company, Comma, found 1 in 2 motorists had defective braking systems, with 29% of them so poor they were unintentionally risking their lives every day.
If the boiling point tester identifies a low boiling point, this can be converted into a brake fluid change, but the opportunity should then be taken to offer a full diagnostic brake check. For example, if the fluid level is low in the master cylinder reservoir, brake fluid may be leaking from another location. Customers need to be informed & offered a full brake safety check to identify this.
Offering a free service & better still, a free safety service, starts that process. A boiling point tester is a revenue generating product that can pay for itself within a few weeks.

How to Test Brake Fluid?
FACT: Approx. 3 in 5 vehicles have fluid that has absorbed too much moisture to be safe
Conductivity is not a method approved by any of the leading brake fluid & braking system manufacturers, or by vehicle manufacturers.
The only approved & accurate way to test brake fluid is to boil it. Boiling point testers show the actual boiling point on a digital display so the customer can see the results for themselves - before and after the fluid is changed
Conductivity testers remain a problem in the marketplace; failing new brake fluid & passing contaminated brake fluid - you don't have to take our word for it; ask any of the brake fluid manufacturers & they'll confirm the problems caused by conductivity testers.
FACT: It only takes a minute… It takes less than a minute to measure the
boiling point & confirm that the brake fluid has absorbed too much moisture to be safe
Approved by ALL the major brake & brake fluid manufacturers. Boiling Point Tester – the ONLY approved way to test brake fluid.
This is the industry standard world wide!

The Diagnostic Part of the Sales Process
For the technician in the workshop, this should be an integral part ofthe sales process
Each customer who visits the workshop represents potential for abraking system service
The importance of this should be explained to the customer
The Alba patented brake fluid tester is approved, recommended and sold by the world’s leading Brake System & Brake Fluid manufacturers, as well as well as leading global aftermarket brands. The Alba Brake Fluid Tester works on the boiling point method; the only approved method that guarantees reliable, repeatable & accurate test results.
