BRACHIAL PLEXUS

OBJECTIVES.

• DEFINATION OF PLEXUS

• HOW IT IS FORMED

• DIFFERENT PARTS OF BRACHIAL PLEXUS.

• BRANCHES FROM BRACHIAL PLEXUS

BRACHIAL PLEXUS

• Plexus means the network of ventral divisions of Spinal nerve( C5, C6 ,C7,C8 and T1)

PARTS OF THE BRACHIAL PLEXUS

• Root • Trunk • Divisions• Cords

ROOTS OF BRACHIAL PLEXUS

• Roots are the ventral division of spinal nerves• C5, C6, C7, C8, T1.• PLEASE NOTE THAT ROOT OF THE SPINA NERVE IS NOT THE

SAME AS THE ROOT OF SPINAL NERVE

TYPICAL SPINAL NERVE.

Spinal nerve has• ROOTS (ant & Post)• RAMI (ventral and

dorsal)

BRACHIAL PLEXUS PARTS AND FORMATION

• There are three trunks of the brachial plexus• Superior (formed by the union of C5 and C6• Middle is the continuation of C7• Inferior is formed by the union of C8 and T1

DIVISIONS

• Each of the trunk divides into ventral and dorsal parts and forms the three following cords

• MEDIAL • LATERAL • POSTERIOR

FORMATION OF THE CORDS

• Medial cord Is formed the by the continuation of the anterior division of lower trunk

• Lateral cord is formed by the two division of upper and middle trunk

• posterior cord is formed by all the posterior division of three trunks.

BRANCHES OF THE BRACHIAL PLEXUS FROM ROOTS.

Two branches are derived from the roots of the brachial plexus

1. Dorsal scapular nerve 2. Long thoracic nerve

BRANCHES FROM THE TRUNKS

Only upper trunk gives the two branches1. Supra scapular 2. subscapular

BRANCHES FROM THE MEDIAL CORD

There five branches derived from Medial cord1. Medial pectoral nerve 2. Medial cutaneous nerve of arm3. Medial cutaneous nerve of fore arm4. Medial root of median nerve5. Ulnar nerve.

BRANCHES FROM THE LATERAL CORD

1. Lateral pectoral nerve2. Lateral root of the median nerve3. Musculocutaneous nerve

BRANCHES FROM THE POSTERIOR CORD

1. Upper suscapular 2. Lower subscapular3. Thoracodorsal4. Radial 5. Axilary
