Boston & The Stamp Act

Townshend Acts

The Townshend Acts where a string of laws passed after the Stamp Acts where repealed. They taxed the British North American Colonies on lead, glass, paints, paper, and tea.

Townshend Acts and Boston

Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party was a result of the Tea Act

Although the Tea Act lowered the price of tea the colonists didn’t like it because the British where still taxing them without representation and it gave the East India Company a monopoly over there tea.

Because of this a group of patriots in Boston dressed up as Indians and threw the tea over board.

Intolerable acts

The Intolerable Acts

The intolerable acts where designed to punish Boston for the tea party. The bill said that Boston Harbor would be closed until all of the lost tea was paid for. It also put Mass. government under British control. Many colonists saw the Acts as a violation of, their natural rights, and their colonial charters. They therefore viewed the acts as a threat to the liberties of all of British America, not just Massachusetts

New York

New York was once a Dutch trading post known as New Amsterdam. When England took it over they changed the name to New York and used it as a major fort during the French & Indian War.

Philadelphia

For a period in history Philadelphia was our nations biggest city. It was also the most accepting city in the colonies. One election in Philadelphia became known as the Bloody Election occurred when there was conflict between the Quakers, and the "Proprietors", whose main concern was business .The Quakers were most concerned about freedom, peace between citizens and the Indians, and low taxes. It was also our nations capital until 1800
