Books for AsiaVietnam

The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia programhas operated in Vietnam since 1993 through apartnership with the National Library in Hanoi. The program provides high-quality educationalmaterials to help improve the scientific knowledgeof Vietnamese citizens, and to promote the devel-opment of various educational fields in Vietnam.

Since 2005, the Foundation has worked with the National Library and other local partners toorganize a number of innovative events highlight-ing the joy of reading and the invaluable role thatpublic libraries play in bringing information topeople from all walks of life. We have workedwith librarians all over the country to producebook exhibitions, reading festivals, children’s artcontests, writing contests, and internet festivals.

The Foundation has also provided a series oftrainings for public library staff on service provi-sion and connecting with their communities.

Our books help school and university students inVietnam:

n Expand their imaginations, critical thinking skills, and understanding of the world.

n Enhance their English-language capacity enabling them to access global information.

n Advance their professional knowledge in crit-ical areas including education, medicine, law, engineering, and public administration.

Globally, Books

for Asia puts nearly

one million brand-new

books into the hands

of students, educators,

and local and

national leaders in

18 countries annually.

The Asia Foundation

has been supporting

Vietnam’s ongoing

transformation since

1993 through a

network of committed

partners in govern-

ment, the private

sector, and civil society,

and a resident office

in Hanoi since 2000.

Vietnam's extraordinary literacy rate (over 90 percent) exemplifies a culture with a high regard for edu-cation. Vietnam's rapid economic growth and greater global integration in the past two decades havesparked strong public demand for English-language training, more dynamic teaching methodologies, andthe latest scientific knowledge. More effective education and training is a top priority if Vietnam is tosustain its remarkable economic growth and social transformation.
