Body Tissues

Tissues are groups of cells with similar structure and function

Four primary types of tissues:

1. Epithelium tissue

2. Connective tissue

3. Nervous tissue

4. Muscle tissue

I. Epithelial Tissues

A. 4 Basic Functions

1.Protection

2.Absorption

3.Filtration

4.Secretion

B. Classification of Epithelium

1. Number of cell layers

• Simple – one layer

• Stratified – more than one layer

B. Classification of Epithelium

2. Shape of cells

1. Squamous – flattened

2. Cuboidal – cube-shaped

3. Columnar – column-like

C. Simple Epithelium

E. Glandular Epithelium

• Secretes a particular product

• Two major gland types

Exocrine glands have ducts

Location - Sweat and oil glands

Endocrine glands do not have ducts

Location - Pituitary gland

Connective Tissue

A. Functions

1. Binds body tissues together

2. Supports the body

3. Provides protection

Also Note: Connective tissue has varying amounts of vascularization AND typically contain extracellular matrix

B. Connective Tissue Types

1. Osseous (bone)

III. Muscle Tissue

A. Three types

• Skeletal muscle

• Cardiac muscle

• Smooth muscle

IV. Nervous Tissue

• Transmit impulses around the body
