BNMT Earthquake Response and Relief Initiative (Oct, Nov & Dec, 2015)
CONDUCTION OF FREE HEALTH CAMP, MEDICAL AID AND DISTRIBUTION OF WATER PURIFIER BAG FOR SENIOR CITIZENS OF BHAKTAPUR MUNICIPALITY
On 3rd October, 2015 BNMT organised a free health camp
for senior citizen of Bhaktapur Municipality in collaboration with Basu
Higher Secondary School and Concern Nepal, Bhaktapur. The
programme was organised with formal opening session followed by
health camp session. Logistics and venue was provided by Basu
Higher Secondary School where Concern Nepal provided lunch for all
participated senior citizens including volunteers and medical team.
BNMT supported with the medical team, drugs and other equipment.
Two hundred and eighty four (284) senior citizens benefitted from
the camp with the free medicine as prescribed along with soap and ORS. Water purifier bags were also distributed
to 265 senior citizens during the health camp which was donated by AmeriCares (bag consist of 27 P&G packet for
at least one month). Brief description and the demonstration were done regarding the proper use of water purifier
bag. All Senior Citizens were very happy to get all those services provided on that day.

BNMT TEAM ATTENDED THE REVIEW OF MHPSS AND CERTIFICATE
DISTRIBUTION PROGRAMME
On 8th October, 2015 BNMT Nepal Team was invited in District
Public Health Office, Teku, Kathmandu for the review of MHPSS
and Certificate Distribution Programme. BNMT Nepal provided
technical and financial support to DPHO regarding MHPSS to
mobilise 70 volunteers. Mr Sri Krishna Bhatta - Chief of Public
Health Office, Mrs Chetana Lopsang - Executive Director of
Relief Trust, Dr Chuda Bahadur Shrestha - Sr. Vice Chair of
Former Police Council Nepal, Volunteers, including Mr. Suman
Chandra Gurung - Programme Director of BNMT Nepal and
DPHO staffs were present in the programme.
WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY
On 9th October, 2015 BNMT Team was delighted to attend
the programme to mark the World Mental Health Day with
slogan of “Dignity in Mental Health” organized by Pratham
Paila (First Step). The programme was inaugurated by the
Health and population Minister Mr Khaga Raj Adhikari
followed by his speech and Certificate distribution to those
who were actively involved in the field of mental health.
Speakers were renowned Psychiatrist Dr Kapil Sharma, Dr
Saroj Ojha the head of Mental Health IOM and Dr Padam
Bahadur Chand, Dr Guna Raj Lohani from MoHP. All of
them emphasises on the current situation and importance
of mental health in the today’s scenario
Water Purifier Bag Distribution Programme On 14th October 2015, BNMT organised Water Purifier Bag Distribution Programme in collaboration with
AmeriCares and NCV at Sherpa IDP Camp, Jagdol, Kathmandu. Mr Riaz Khalil from Americares witnessed the
distribution of purifier bags to the targeted community.
Total 96 earthquake affected family members were benefited by the water purifier bags with purifier packet for
one month (which consists of P&G water purifier 27 packets in each bag). Demonstration was also done by BNMT
team for the proper use of those bags and oriented regarding an importance of safe drinking water.
All the benefited people were very happy after receiving it and thanked everyone for their support.
ART THERAPY SESSION AT PRISONERS ASSISTANCE NEPAL
On 15th October, 2015 BNMT organised Art Therapy session at Prisoners
Assistance Nepal (PA Nepal), Nayabazaar in collaboration with The Relief
Trust to mark the World Mental Health Day. Ms. Chetana Lokshum of The
Relief trust facilitated the programme with an assistance provided by Mr.
Aashish, where BNMT assisted with logistics support. 11 children of PA
Nepal actively participated the programme where they were introduced
with the Caricature Game and Art Therapy. The 1st half of the art
therapy was based on their present situation such as difficulties, wishes,
aim, struggle etc. The second half of the therapy was based on the
Emotional Wheel where they mentioned different kind of emotions such as
happy, sad, fear, confusion, love, hate etc. as a form of numbers and described it
individually
AMERI CARES AND BNMT NEPAL VISITED HEALTH FACILITIES OF MAKAWANPUR DISTRICT
Joint visit made by AmeriCares headquarter Director-Brian Hoyer, Vice President-Garrett Ingoglia, Nepal Team leader-Riaz Khalil and BNMT Nepal Programme Director- Suman Chandra Gurung along with government personal towards the Makawanpur district on 10th November, 2015. Need assessment carried out in Nibuwatar Health Post, Tistung Health Post and Bajrabarahi Health Post for the reconstruction of Health facilities. BNMT Nepal and AmeriCares are planning to reconstruct the four health facilities in Makwanpur and conduct public health interventions such as water sanitation and hygiene programme (WASH), mental health and psychosocial programme (MHPSS) and disaster risk reduction (DRR) programme in near future.
ESSENTIAL MEDICINES HANDED OVER TO TAMAKHOSHI COOPERATIVE HOSPITAL
On 8th November, 2015 BNMT handed over essential medicines to Tamakoshi Cooperative Hospital for Ramechhap district as a part of support for earthquake relief initiatives.
PSYCHOSOCIAL COUNSELLING AND SUPPORT TRAINING
BNMT PSS Team provided Psychosocial Counselling and Support Training (PSS) to 18 Volunteers of Nobel Compassionate Volunteer (NCV) for 2 days from 8th November to 9th November 2015 at the Premises of NCV, Baluwatar, Kathmandu. The sessions were based on active participation. Participants were trained on the topics like Non Violent communication (NVC), grief and loss processing, PFA, communication skills, grounding, Mental Health referral, self-care with different activities including games.
FREE HEALTH CHECK-UP CONDUCTED AT HIMALAYAN OLD AGE HOME, GONGABU, KATHMANDU
On 22nd November, 2015 BNMT Team along with Dr Johnny Payne, Board of Trustee BNMT UK and Dr Kulesh Thapa, Country Representative visited Himalayan Old Age Home for the Free Health Check-up of nearly 12 elderly citizens. Along with this, free medicines were provided as per prescription. After completion of the free health check-up essential medicines were handed over to Home management and some relief materials were also provided. They were very glad from the service received and thanked BNMT team for providing such a great effort to serve them.

BNMT is very glad to receive Certificate of Appreciation from District Public Health Office (DPHO), Kathmandu on
15th November, 2015 for contributing tireless technical assistance and financial support to address the issues on
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS) for the victims and survivors of 7.8 Richter Scale
Earthquake in Kathmandu district from April to November 2015.

VISIT OF PROF DR SURYA PRASAD SUBEDI AT THE HEAD OFFICE OF BNMT NEPAL
It was our great pleasure to welcome and interact with renowned
personality Prof Dr Surya Prasad Subedi Co-Chair and Board of Trustee of Britain Nepal Medical Trust on 30th October 2015 at the head office of BNMT Nepal for the staff meeting to share updates of BNMT Nepal’s post-earthquake management initiative programmes and to observe ongoing WASH programme in Bhaktapur Municipality -1, Chokhate.
PROF DR SURYA PRASAD SUBEDI AND THE TEAM OF BNMT NEPAL VISITED BHAKTAPUR MUNICIPALITY
On 30th November, 2015 Prof. Dr. Surya Prasad Subedir (Co-chair & board of trustee, Britain Nepal Medical Trust),
Dr. Kulesh Thapa (Country Representative) and Mr. Raghu Dhital visited Chokhate, ward no. 1 of Bhaktapur
Municipality to observe our ongoing construction of Gender Friendly Community Toilet.
ART COUNSELLING CONDUCTED AT EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN (EDUC)-NEPAL
On 8th December, 2015 BNMT visited Education and Development for the Underprivileged Children (EDUC- Nepal)
located at Basundhara, Kathmandu for Art Counselling. Nearly 31 children, age ranging from 5 to 12 years were
benefitted.
HEALTH CAMP FOR SENIOR CITIZENS IN BYASI, BHAKTAPUR
BNMT Nepal organized free health camp including General,respiratory,
Gynae and orthopedic check up for senior citizens of Bhaktapur
Municipality on December 19, 2015. The camp was conducted in
Bhaktapur Municipality in collaboration with Youth Initiative Group,
Byasi, Bhaktapur. Youth Initiative Group managed banner, prescription
pad along with breakfast/lunch and other logistics. Similarly BNMT
Nepal supported medical team with drugs and other equipments. Two
hundred and eighty (280) senior citizens were benefitted from free
medical checkup, and medicine along with a packet of soap and oral
rehydration solution (ORS) and multivitamin. Similarly, psychosocial counseling was provided to needy people.
ART COUNSELLING AND ASSERTIVENESS EDUCATION AT EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN (EDUC), BASUNDHAR
On 21st December, 2015 psychosocial team visited Education and Development for
the Underprivileged Children (EDUC), Basundhar for follow up Art Counseling. Total
14 children were present and were very excited to involve in the session.
The art counseling was conducted in two phase. First students were asked to draw
their beautiful and painful moment in life where they portrayed the memories through
drawing. In second phase students again expressed their aim in life. Through their
drawings we found that they were still afraid of earthquake and violence. With
knowing the fact that there were high chances of substance and child abuse in
their community, they were taught
about different education on abuse
(substance, child) with assertiveness education.
With this effort children exhibited less fear and able to boost up their
self-confident.
FREE HEALTH CAMP IN KUNCHOWK, SINDUPALCHOWK FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
On 30th December, 2015 BNMT Nepal conducted free health to the earthquake affected people at Kunchowk -3,
Sindhupalchowk. The affected community were provided free health checkup on Orthopedic, Gynecology,
Pediatric and General OPD services. Four specialized doctors, one nurse and pharmacist provided the services to
423 people including women (pregnant, lactating), men, elderly and children. Free medicines were also distributed
to the people as per the prescription. The health camp was ended with the handover of stretcher to the Mahendra
Higher Secondary School.
