BLOOD

Ms. Whitney | Vet Science | Block 4 | Kiel High School

OBJECTIVES

• Students will be able to list the components of blood and their functions with 100% accuracy.

• Students will be able to create a blood mixture illustrating the components based on the make up of blood

IMPORTANCE

• Transports oxygen and nutrients to the lungs and tissues

• Forms blood clots to prevent excess blood loss

• Carries cells and antibodies that fight infection

• Brings waste products to the kidneys and liver (Kidney and Liver filter and clean blood)

• Regulates body temperature

Whole Blood Mixture

PlasmaRed Blood CellsWhite Blood CellsPlatelets~55%~44%

What does blood run through?

Veins- Low pressure

Arteries- High pressure

Capillaries- Doorway between Veins and arteries

All: Tubes that carry oxygen-depleted blood toward the heart.

• Why is Blood Important?

• What to Look For• Component Functions/ Purpose

BLOOD COMPONENTS

PLASMA• Thick liquid

• Transports food and waste

• Carries Proteins

• Regulates Bleeding and Clotting

RED BLOOD CELLSErythrocytes (RBC’s)

• Carries oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body

• Carries Nutrients

WHITE BLOOD CELLSLeukocytes

• Fight Infection

• Significantly larger than red blood cells

• Far fewer cells then red

• Clean up old blood cells

• Fight the germs that enter your body

PLATELETSThrombocytes

• Tiny cell fragments

• Form clots when cut

• Too Few Platelets: extensive bleeding• Too Many: leads to unnecessary clotting, stokes and heart attacks
