BLACK HISTORY …  AND DAVY CROCKETT ?

A short story by Storyteller Susan O’Halloran

Two five year olds play at a bus stop outside the old Marshall Fields Store on State Street in Chicago, in the 1950s.

The young girl is white. The young boy is black.

Their mothers have bought them the very popular Davy Crockett bearskin caps.

Each mother and child wait for their different bus ride home.

The young children chant the popular TV theme song “Davy Crockett“ and dance around the bus stop as they wait for their buses.

“Davy Crockett … King of the Wild Frontier”

The first bus arrives. The black mother with her young son boards the bus. The young girl also tries to follow her singing young friend onto the bus.

The white mother grabs her daughter and pulls her back onto the sidewalk as the doors close and the bus departs.

The girl had been delighted with her new singing friend. But her mother has a different view and gives her young daughter a life lesson about separation and race.

Storyteller Sue O’Halloran was that young girl.
