High School Program Partnerships
• One year, open to juniors or seniors • Developed at the same time as the college
program• >10 high schools• > 500 high school students• Emphasis on hands on, problem-solving• Concurrent enrollment credit
• UVU built a new degree on SLCC’s existing 2 year degree
• UVU agreed to offer enough upper division credits on SLCC campus so that students would not need to commute
• The degree includes a requirement for at least 10 cr hours of internship/independent research

The SLCC Biotech Pipeline
But a major challenge emerges in all parts of this pipeline:
• Approx 65% high school students juniors
• FLEXIBLE college internships
• Real-world research opportunities
Enter
• Non-profit contract research organization• Commonly used business model• Start-up needs:
• Personnel• Equipment
• Flexible• Legitimate research for students and the
community

InnovaBio for Biomanufacturing?
It’s a great idea, but problems emerge…
How can products that require the rigors of GMP be contracted to our students from companies?
But, the need and the potential for hands on training remains.
