INSTROMEDIX (JAIPUR)

FIRST PLANT FOR BIOMEDICAL WASTE IN JAIPUR IN 2001

MAINTAINED BY JAIPUR NAGAR NIGAM & CENTRAL

CONTROL BOARD POLLUTION

TREATING AND MANAGING WASTE FROM HOSPITALS OF JAIPUR

ITS BRANCHES ARE ALSO DEVELOPED IN VARIOUS STATES OF INDIA

introductionWaste generated during the diagnosis, testing, treatment, research or production of biological products for humans or animals (WHO)

Sources of biomedical wastesMajor Sources

Need of BMW management?

Hazardous health care waste can result in the following : 1. Infection

2. Genotoxicity

3. Chemical toxicity

4. Radioactivity hazards.

5. Physical injuries

Waste Sharps eg: Needles

Human anatomical waste

Discarded medicines

Solid waste eg: cotton swabs

Methods for treatment and disposal

incineration90% of the bio-medical waste(organic) is treated by

incinerationThis is a process where combustible waste are reduced to

gaseous product and incombustible waste is reduced to ash All this process needs primary chamber ,secondary chamber,

diesel , electricity etcTemperature of primary chamber above 800◦c And secondary chamber above 1000◦c

Autoclaving The autoclave process is technology for the sterilization of all

types of bio-medical wastes. It needs high temperature(121◦C) and high pressure steam(105

K Pa)Effective sterilization results in the destruction of bacteria,

virus, spores, fungi & other pathogenic microorganisms. All the waste are packed in vaccum bags for sterilization.

shreddingUsed to destroy plastics and sharp solid waste so that their

reuse can be prevented.1% sodium hypochlorite is used to treat the inorganic wastes. It has a set of blades/shafts ,which cut the waste into small

pieces.Maintenance cost is high

Disposal in ash pitIncineration ashes are disposed in secured landfills.Solid wastes like sharps after disinfectant are disposed in

secured municipal landfills.

Conclusion Pollution free treatment and disposal of bio-medical waste

safely. All the treatment and disposal is done within norms of CPCB

& guidelines.Workers have chance of getting infection while doing

segregation of bio-medical wastes therefore proper treatment methods must be followed.
