What is Biological Sciences?The study of living things has undergone a revolution in recent

years. There have been unprecedented technological advances in

disciplines like biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology,

developmental biology, neuroscience and computational biology.

Biological sciences majors make observations and ask questions

that help to solve real world problems. In-depth exposure to multiple

disciplines prepares students to be at the forefront of new fields,

markets and policy decisions.

The Degree in Biological SciencesThe undergraduate degree in biological sciences at Carnegie Mellon

University in Qatar is offered in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medical

College in Qatar. The program uses interdisciplinary approaches

to tackle some of today’s most important scientific problems, and

provides students with an education that has both intellectual breadth

and depth of exposure to modern research biology.

This quantitative course requires substantial laboratory experience,

and equips students with the skills needed to approach new scientific

problems from fresh angles.

What the Program InvolvesThe Biological Sciences program has a core curriculum that provides a

foundation in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and

physics. In addition to the core courses, the program includes biological

sciences electives, as well as general electives that allow students to

shape their degree program according to their interests and goals.

Students often enhance their undergraduate laboratory experience by

engaging in a 10-week discovery-based research program at an on-

campus lab or collaborating institution. The research experience helps

students apply the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they learn

in the classroom to real-world situations.

Career Paths and Potential EmployersBiological sciences graduates can gain employment immediately after

graduation in academic, government or industry research laboratories.

Alternatively, students may choose to pursue graduate studies in a

variety of areas such as science, public health, law or business. A degree

in biological sciences provides excellent preparation for medical school.

Typical career paths for biological sciences graduates include research

scientist in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical field, education, patent

law, technical writer or business development manager.
