The Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

One of the dangers that constantly hits the pine trees are fires that occur every summer.

High mountain ecosystems

On the islands of Tenerife and La Palma we find above 2000m, the leguminous shrub mountain ecosystem.

In the highest areas the Teide Violet (Viola cheiranthifolia) grows.

The Teide violet (Viola cheiranthifolia).

The are some outstanding birds to be seen in spring and summer, such as the tit (Parus caeruleus), the canary bird (Serinus canarius) or the Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata). On the other hand, there are some which live in these ecosystems throughout the year, such as the roadman (Anthus berthelotii) or alcaudón (Lanius meridionalis).

The tit (Parus caeruleus)

The main changes that have suffered these ecosystems come from grazing.

The Barbary sheep and mouflon, introduced some decades ago, have caused significant damage.
