English Notebook

Active and Passive Voice

In the active voice the subject performs the action of the verb. (Think…did the subject DO the verb?) If YES, it is ACTIVE.

My uncle bought the truck.

When should you use ACTIVE VOICE?

1) You want to be clear.

2) You don’t want to be “wordy.”

3) You know the “doer.”

In the Passive voice the subject performs the action of the verb.

(Think…did the subject DO the verb?) If NOT, it is PASSIVE.

The truck was bought by my uncle.

When is it fine to use PASSIVE VOICE?

1) You want to be purposefully vague.

2) You don’t know the identity of the ‘doer’.

3) The ‘doer’ is not important.

Number your notes 1-5 and copy each sentence.

1. Maddie won first place in the marathon.

2. Izzy was driven to school by her mother.

3. Several friends admired my new bike.4. The book was read by Mrs. Harmon.5. School started all too soon.
