BIOCHAR PRESENTATIONBy the Philippine Biochar Association

Biochar Program Goals

1. To create livelihood opportunities for rural households by converting agricultural and countryside biomass by-products into biochar

2. To incorporate biochar into farmlands of small farmers to improve farm yields and family income

3. Help mitigate the greenhouse effect caused by vehicle emissions and farming.

BIOCHAR

• Biochar is charcoal created by pyrolysis (burning with minimal oxygen) of biomass

• When biochar is added to the soil, it is known to stay in the soil for thousands of years. A recent study made by the University of Bayreuth in Germany showed that 1 hectare of land with biochar plowed in at 1 meter depth holds 250 tons of carbon compared with 100 tons in soil without biochar.

The Carbon Dioxide Cycle

Through pyrolysis carbon is sequestered and prevented from converting into the greenhouse gas of CO2

Adding Biochar to Farm Lands

Soil without biochar Soil with biochar

Biochar Benefits to Farm Soils

• boosts soil fertility• prevents soil erosion• improves soil quality by raising soil pH• traps moisture, attracting more beneficial fungi

and microbes• improves cation (positive ion) exchange capacity• helps the soil hold nutrient• improves water quality by retaining

agrochemicals and metals

Better than Compost• biochar is a more stable nutrient source than

compost and manure. Biochar, therefore, as a soil amendment can increase crop yields, reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, and minimize the adverse environmental effects of agrochemicals in the environment.

BIOCHAR• Helps mitigate greenhouse effect by trapping

carbon for thousand of years!• Captures even more carbon when plowed into

farmlands!• Improves soil quality for better food production

PBiA has recently set up a network in Zambales in partnership

with the Botolan Local Government, a local NGO called Sambali, and the Bucao Farmer Irrigators Association.

Other networks are similarly being organized around the country .

Carbon Sequestration Validation and Certification ProgramThe Philippine Biochar Association (PBiA), in partnership with local government units (LGUs), local non-government organizations (NGOs), and people’s organizations (POs), has taken the initiative to introduce VERIFIED & CERTIFIED carbon sequestration in the Philippines using Biochar and offer it as avenue for VOLUNTARY CARBON OFFSET .

Incorporating biochar into agricultural land is a simple process and can easily be done by a farmer… In partnership with PBiA, for every 1.1 tons of biochar incorporated in agricultural land, the LOCAL BIOCHAR NETWORK issues a master certificate verifying this activity.

Carbon Offset Sticker Program

P1,500 Answers for up to 1,000 kilos of Carbon Emissions AND provides livelihood and better food supply

Issues Negative Carbon Stickers against each Master Certificate, 4 stickers to one Master Certificate.

The sticker sales fund the biochar production and soil integration by the

farmer’s organization

• > For every Php1500 sticker sold, Php 875 goes to the Local Biochar Network for– PRODUCING– FARM INCORPORATION– VALIDATION– VERIFICATION and CERTIFICATION – (70% to Farmer, 10% to LGU, 20% to NGO) The Philippine Biochar Association receives Php 275 per sticker for sticker

management, website access, awareness building, promotions; And Php 350 goes to marketing
