•  Efficiencies – quicker production •  Quality – less variations •  More time for design

•  Future delivery process for all construction projects

Case Studies

•  Hinkler Hall of Aviation •  Wongaburra •  Tamborine Mountain College •  Faith Lutheran College

Hinkler Hall of Aviation

3D Shop Drawings •  Completed in 2007 •  3D Structural Steel Shop drawings produced in Tekla. •  Quick and easy review process •  Model reviewed outside of ArchiCAD •  1800 shop drawings produced but not necessary to review in

as much detail.

Hinkler Hall of Aviation 3D Steel Shop Drawing Feedback

•  Upgrade of Aged Care Beds and utilising an undercroft space. •  2530 Floor to underside of slab •  Habitable Administration Space required •  Modeling the answer

Wongaburra

Wongaburra

Tamborine Mountain College Communicating with a Virtual Model •  Pilot project using Graphisoft BIMX

Software. •  Issued to Contractor for trialing on

Site.

Tamborine Mountain College

Faith Lutheran College

•  Pilot Project for fully coordinated Consultant Team Model •  Creation of workflows for multi-platform team

Faith Lutheran College Workflow

Faith Lutheran College

Faith Lutheran College

•  Cost $10k timecost to test and develop workflows, not a hidden overhead. Now in place a good investment.

•  Delivered the project with -0.3% in Latent, Authority, Documentation Variations. Client Variations 1.4%

•  Contractor didn’t embrace technology or 3D shop drawings

The Future – where are we heading

•  Everything is modelled •  All notation automated, derived straight from the model •  Specification & Schedules generated directly from the model •  Model checking software will perform majority of QA tasks •  Developing process of communication with our QS •  Developing processes with our builders so they benefit

File Types – Issuing your Work •  Why would you send a native file type?

•  You don’t send a word or excel file, you issue a PDF.

•  Disadvantages of sending IFC •  Data can be lost or not transferred correctly. •  Workflows can require more effort.

•  Advantages of sending IFC •  You control the information you want to issue. •  More effort required by your peers to recreate your

objects. •  Can be opened in many more software packages used

by the construction industry.

Thank You
