Bible Lit MP3

Day 1 Bellringer

• What is Noah known for doing?

God showing wrath, mercy, judgment, and forgiveness all in one

• Answer the following on your own sheet, working together as you wish.– What was the problem that led to Noah’s story?– What did God do showing his wrath?– What did God do showing his mercy?– Why did God choose Noah?– What did Noah do right?– What did Noah do wrong after the flood?– What was Noah’s punishment for his mistake?

The point:

• The Bible can be used to justify many things, depending on what parts you read and how you decide to interpret them.

• People throughout time have sometimes correctly done what God wants, and sometimes misinterpreted or done the wrong thing in spite of what God wants.

Day 2 Bellringer

• Find a Bible verse (using online resources amongst your table) that would justify each of the following:– Not cutting your hair ever– A woman not getting divorced even if being

abused and hurt by her husband– Killing someone who doesn’t believe in God

Three Major things the Bible did in the 1700’s

• Enlightenment

• Revolutions

• Justification both for and against slavery

Enlightenment

• Changed the way people viewed rulers and the responsibilities of rulers

Chart on enlightenment and revolution

• Stuff about revolution being supported or not by the Bible

Day 3 Bellringer

• What is the worst thing/event in America’s history (hint: it’s not 9/11)?

From revolution to being dumb

• Some of the things the Bible has been used to justify are absolutely debatable…some are basically crazy

• How was the Earth created?– How was it described?– What were its characteristics?

• What was the problem?– What happened as a result?– What does that mean for long term consequences

• Coach explains why racial slavery existed…

Story of Exodus• Exodus 1:8-14• GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)• The Israelites Become Slaves• 8 Then a new king, who knew nothing about Joseph, began to rule in Egypt.

9 He said to his people, “There are too many Israelites, and they are stronger than we are. 10 We have to outsmart them, or they’ll increase in number. Then, if war breaks out, they will join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”

• 11 So the Egyptians put slave drivers in charge of them in order to oppress them through forced labor. They built Pithom and Rameses as supply cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more the Israelites were oppressed, the more they increased in number and spread out. The Egyptians couldn’t stand them any longer. 13 So they forced the Israelites to work hard as slaves. 14 They made their lives bitter with back-breaking work in mortar and bricks and every kind of work in the fields. All the jobs the Egyptians gave them were brutally hard.

Slavery

Slavery is “ok” according to God

• Find 5 verses that justify slavery, or that could be used to justify slavery.

Day 4 Bellringer

• True of false – the Bible says slavery is ok.

Other things the Bible “says”

• Over the next several days, we will look at modern topics that the Bible speaks about one way or another.

• Using online resources, look for 3 topics you would like to discuss in terms of what the Bible says.
