WELCOME TO BESPOKED 2018 - THE UK HANDMADE BICYCLE SHOWA CELEBRATION OF HANDMADE BICYCLES & THOSE WHO MAKE THEM.
We are delighted to welcome you back to Bristol for the 8th annual Bespoked, Europe’s biggest showcase of handmade bicycles and their makers. 100 of the world’s finest artisan bicycle framebuilders and bicycle goods designers have gathered at Brunel’s Old Station bringing with them unique handmade bicycles and fine cycling components, apparel and accessories, many unveiled for the first time. As well as classically beautiful bikes of all disciplines you can expect to see groundbreaking design and alternative visions from people who think outside the box. Bespoked is the highlight in the framebuilders’ calendar and they all work hard to bring something special to the show. London cycle café Look Mum No Hands will be serving delicious artisan coffee, craft beer and homemade food. We would like to thank everyone who has attended and all those exhibiting for making this year’s show happen. Thank you to Tangwyn Andrews for all his help and support with the organisation of the show. Thank you to Ben Broomfield for photographing the show and the exhibitors work. Don’t forget to vote for your favourite exhibitor and have the chance to win 2 tickets to the Cyclist Magazine Track Day at Castle Combe on Sunday 29th April. The voting slip is on the back of your entry ticket and the winner will be announced on Sunday afternoon.
Many thanks for supporting Bespoked and we hope you enjoy the show!

Sharing a stand with our Cycling Brethren at Boneshaker, B-side Bikes is making its inaugural appearance at Bespoked 2018. We’re a bikeminded collectiv who dream up and make bike-luggage for the intrepid tourer. This year, we will showcase just one model – the B-side Flightrider. It’s a beauty and we think it breaks some actual new ground in what it does for the cycle tourers among us. Come and say hello & see what you think.

Of all the reactions Darren (Baum) receives when customers meet him it is typically ‘but you’re so….young?“ The confusion is palpable. How can a man not yet fifty have nearly three decades of frame building expertise? The answer is simple: dedication, hard work, mistakes and a drive to do things better. Do not accept any barrier. Step outside the status quo. Ride your own race. Darren did. The result is what you know as Baum Cycles. The little corner of Geelong producing some of the world’s best bespoke bicycles. Today the team at Baum has expanded beyond the man who started it. A complete in-house paint workshop, cutting edge fitting studio and a factory floor spanning two workshops make it a far cry from the humble beginnings. But the core remains the same. Fit. Handling. Design. Ride. The beauty is in the simplicity. It’s what allows us to create what we do. And is what leads us to you.

Scaling:Be very careful scaling these logos. It can throw the radii out.If you scale a logo down too much the radii become too sharp then dross over into a loop.If you go too big, the radii become too large and the logo looks no good It also throws out the pin sizes

Over almost a century and a half, Brooks England has grown from a small workshop to a byword in quality craftsmanship. Back in 1865, John Boultbee Brooks left his hometown of Hinckley in Leicestershire with just £20 in his pocket. On 28 October 1882, Mr Brooks filed his first saddle patent. Inspired by the timeless products designed by our predecessors, we have revived the original slogan ‘Saddles, Bags, Etc’ and introduced a range of cycle bags and other cycling accessories.

Boneshaker is a beautiful, story-driven publication celebrating the exciting things that happen when people and bikes come together. We’re about freedom, friendship and adventure - the human side of cycling. No training tips or race diets here. It’s not how much your bike weighs that matters, but where it takes you. It’s not how fast you got there, but what you saw along the way.

Bike Science was established in March 2010 by Andy Sexton. Andy has over twenty five years of competitive biking experience and over twenty years as a triathlete. While working at Planet X he identified the need to be able to offer accurate, professional bike fitting services to riders wishing to buy bikes without being able to try the actual bike for size first and riders wishing to optimise their riding position to increase performance, avoid injury or improve comfort. He started Bike Science with these aims in mind.

Hand Built, Silver Brazed, Quality Frames. Beautiful, classic, true to the process. In a sometimes pre-fab, one-size-fits-all, disposable culture, what I find myself most interested in building are quality frames that will last your lifetime, using the same techniques that master builders of high end bicycles have used for ages. Because I build each frame, one at a time in my own shop, I am able to take my time with each step of the process, and put true skill and craftsmanship into every hand-built silver-brazed frame.

What Dear Susan does is different. Dear Susan applies his creative and enquiring spirit to making bikes more useful and above all more fun. Having a good understanding of the engineering demands of different structures and materials is the baseline, but to keep it interesting you need to use this knowledge to make something new and exciting, to make something that is truly life-enhancing in the way that only bicycles can be. The last few years have seen a huge revival in interest in and demand for hand built frames and there are many great framebuilders out there, but commissioning a bespoke machine is a collaborative process, one that requires a good cooperation between the rider and builder. There are many framebuilders that can make you a classic frame with perfect engineering and immaculate finishing, but there are few who can innovate, who can take the needs of the rider and create something absolutely unique.

The story of the most famous steel tubes in the history of cycling began in 1919 when A.L. Colombo founded his steel plant with the ambition to “to do business in iron and steel and make a fair and honest profit”. The result was the history of cycling as we know it: legendary tube sets AIR, MAX (first tube-set to break the tradition of conventional diameters and introduce concept of orientated ellipses and differentiated sections), SL, SLX, NIVACROM (EL and Genius), Altec, Starship and Spirit right up to the most 2009’s XCR, the world’s first ever tubeless stainless steel tube set which allows for the production of a steel frame competitive (and out-performing in some categories) at the highest level of the sport on all levels: weight (sub-1400g), rigidity, fatigue resistance and of course the remarkably superior handling of steel.

Since 1998, when done with racing, I do love my SingleSpeed and lately my 29er MonsterCrosser. The first steps involved shortening the cranks to 135mm and narrowing the handlebars to 320mm for reasons of knee problems and shorter than average stature respectively. To assist hill climbing, the bike is electric assist with the motor and battery pack in the seat tube. The carbon fibre frame is made with commercial tubes wrapped together with carbon fibre overlay. The saddle/seat post and handlebar/stem are carbon fibre/aluminium composite. A recent development is the use of novel (as far as I know) wedge actuation brake calipers. QUINNTESSENTIAL COLOURS (FRAMEBUILDERS COMMON)Quintessential Colours is a small custom paint and refinishing workshop that I started in 2017. After 11 years in the bicycle industry as a Workshop Manager, having helped and overseen people create and complete countless custom builds, I found real appreciation for hand built bicycles and those that have the skills to create such beautiful articles. I wanted to to go further than just finish the picture, that’s when I was invited to Bespoked 2017 by Rakshasa Customs. We decided to come together and create for his debut. It was in this experience that Quinntessential Colours came about. Following this, I completed the Cole Coatings Intro to Paint course which sharpened my skill set and added new ones which has proved invaluable to providing a fully custom and professional finish to each project I undertake.

After a professional life using my hands, I needed to ‘keep on keeping on’ in retirement. I am a passionate cyclist. I have enjoyed years of commuting to work by bicycle. Sometimes, that was the best bit of the day. I have also undertaken much longer cycling trips. It therefore seemed reasonable to combine the need to use my hands, and that passion for the bicycle. I built my first frame at Downland Cycles. Thereafter I attended The Bicycle Academy to further develop my skills. I believe that the bike you jump on for a trip to the shops, the bike you commute on, head to the beach on, or go camping on, should be the bike that you just love. After all, why leave your favourite bike in the shed awaiting that rare, dry, and free Saturday morning,? You might as well await the blue moon. Why not ride ‘best’ all of the time?

We set out to build the ultimate mountain bikes, using the very best design, materials, and manufacturing technologies . We believe we have achieved that goal, and the reviews of our frames seem to agree. Each and every frame we make is custom made, we don’t believe in three sizes fits all. Using a combination of proprietary carbon tubes and titanium lugs that are produced using Additive Manufacturing (or 3d Printing as many call it) we are able to produce frames in any size/geometry, and they are made by hand here in the UK. The team behind Robot Bike Co has experience in both the world of aerospace and F1, as well of course as the bike industry. We’ve also enlisted the expertise of other companies such as Renishaw, Altair and GRM, and individuals such as Dave Weagle who developed the DW6 suspension platform for us, one that has been simply described as the best there is.

Cameron Jarvis was trained as a jewellery maker. However, before long, his favourite hobby led him to take up work as a bicycle mechanic. After more than a decade in the trade he is still as passionate about bikes as he was on day one. Cameron studied fillet brazing at the Bicycle Academy. He then spent a further two years servicing bikes by day and welding by night, thereby honing his craft. In 2016 Rakshasa Customs was born. We specialise in off-road frames as that’s what we know, and that’s what we ride. Utilising full tube sets, mixing and matching tubes from different manufacturers, and sometimes even producing our own, we create aesthetic, individual, and durable frames, ideally suited to the owner and to their particular riding style.
Innovation is at the heart of all we do. Reynolds Technology invented tube butting back in 1898 as a way to reduce weight safely, and almost 120 years on, this process is still being used on lightweight bike frames today. Reynolds first brought out the highly alloyed steel 531 back in 1935, introduced the first heat treated steel to the industry with the advent of 753 in 1976, and, most recently, have started exploring the possibilities of 3D printing technology, with 3D printed titanium dropouts now commercially available. Their super-steel 953 is currently the strongest tube-set available to builders, and with titanium, hydroformed aluminium, air-hardening 631 and 853, and cold-worked 921, there’s a material to meet every specification. Reynolds celebrate their 120th birthday this December and are still operating out of Birmingham where our story first began, well over a century ago.
