In this book, Benoît Maire addresses his father, transcendental indexation, and the pleasures of being. The language in this text-based piece is non-standard and slang. In addition, the english translation of Catherine Malabou’s essay “The dialectical simplification” is published here in book form for the first time.

The Long Godbeye — a book every one should readbefore travelling to the West Coast.

Der Grundriß: the outline or abridgement. For Hegel, this would be the ideal and paradoxical form for a philosophy book. In German

Grundriß can also mean a layout or ground plan. It is remarkable that this section should appear as the final form of philosophical exposition, one that must abide by an “intended conciseness”. Philosophy simplifies and reduces itself - this is indeed a law of thought. The mind’s rhythm and movement is one of acceleration, effort reduction and contraction of the time necessary for

grasping an object: “An encyclopedia is by nature an abridgement.”1 The principle of simplification and acceleration manifests this fundamental law: knowledge tends to compress itself originally and take conceptual short-cuts. Breaking off, dividing up, severing, reducing, shortening. A self-abridgement, overlapping

circles opening onto one another, showing what follows by thrusting it onto what comes before.

Subject-Symbol-Syllogism.

Hegel argues that “Thought is, after all, the most trenchant epitomist (der mächtigste Epitomator).” 2 Events that have unfolded over “long periods of time” end “foreshorten[ing their] pictures by abstractions”,

that is, by pure signs. This principle is part of the labour of the concept insofar as it operates an “immense abridgement of the singular detail of things.”3 Understanding abstracts its universal meaning from the richness of the sensible. This abstraction does not have, as one might think, the univocal meaning of a killing, but also appears as an

animation. As Hegel puts it in the Science of Logic: “the understanding does indeed give [the categories of thought], [in the form of abstract universality], so to speak, a rigidity of being....; but [through this simplification] at the same time it spiritually impregnates them and so sharpens them.”4 The determinations of thought now take the shape of a “point.”5

The formalising reduction of the speculative content, its logical writing, paradoxically confer to the being stripped of its singularity a kind of style that becomes its “characteristic” (Eigenthümli-chkeit).6 The principle of simplification lies in a reduction of the physiognomicalconstellation of a being, a thing, or a moment of thought to its distinctive feature. In other words,

shrouded to become a mere shadowy outline.... The single individual must also pass through the formative stages of universal Spirit so far as their content is concerned, but as shapes which Spirit has already left behind, as stages on a way that has been made level with toil. Thus, as far as factual information is concerned, we find that what in former ages

the labour through which meaning is sharpened results in the reduction of the whole spiritual path to a mere print whose asperities it erases. “In a Spirit that is more advanced than another, the lower concrete existence has been reduced to an inconspicuous moment; what used to be the important thing is now but a trace; its pattern is

ploughs it. Indeed, the individual must experience the pain and patience of the path and “cannot (...) comprehend his substance more easily”; however, “he does have less trouble, since all this has already been accomplished in itself.”8 The short-cut, which is merely a short-cut as regards the effort that is made - is precisely not a way of cheating

engaged the attention of men of mature mind, has been reduced to the level of facts, exercises, and even games for children.”7 The accumulation-reduction of the spiritual content to its point results in a shortening of the trajectory necessary for grasping it. Thus the individual only needs to make a lesser effort. The point erodes the furrow it ploughs as it

with the length of the path. Thus reduced to its characteristic trait, the thing is enabled to access ideality. Simplification is an eidetic: it brings to light, through its abridging function, the style of singularity. By simplifying itself, rubbing against itself through self-reflection, by polishing itself as it were, every determination illuminates itself. This

illumination results from the tarnishing of the original glow and replaces it. The simplifying operation thus sets the conditions of visibility of presence. Simplification is form playing on itself. An art. Art itself.—Translated from the French by Anna Preger.
