FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE
…….We find ourselves with the cold winter days, still recalling in our minds and hearts
and stomachs the celebrations and festivities shared with loved ones of the most recent
Christmas past.
Talking with parishioners, friends, and staff members stories were shared of celebra-
tions and feasting, which leads to resolutions and hopes for fasting and dieting now. For
many, the worry and concern of where the next meal will come from is a hard and fast reality. We
acknowledge that when we can, we are to live the mandate of the Gospel to “feed the hungry”. One such di-
rect means to that end is to support the “Pack the Pantry” on January 28th of our Sharing Parish, Most Blessed
Trinity.
This year, a challenge is being put out to the Church of St. Mary: how full will we pack the pantry?
Sean Jordan is the chairperson of the Pack the Pantry effort. Sean is working with leadership of the re-
cently revived Men’s Club of St. Mary to support those in need, to feed the hungry and to help us live the
Gospel in 2018! This past October we collected 240 bags of food that fed the hungry. Thanks to all those who
made a contribution.
Can you help us collect and deliver 300 bags this month? I assured Sean and his committee that I am con-
fident our parish can perhaps even exceed this goal of 300 bags. We may keep raising the bar, inviting gener-
osity to those able to live the Gospel and bring food to hungry stomachs of parishioners and friends of our
Sharing Parish during this year.
Food items that are very much appreciated include: Bagged Pinto Beans (1 to 2lb bag), Bagged White
Rice (1 to 2lb bag), Cane Sugar (2 to 4lb bag), Cereal Box (standard box 1lb), Cooking Oil (24 to 48oz plastic
bottles), Canned Goods (standard size Fruit, vegetables, tomatoes, beans), Canned Meat and Fish (5 to 12oz
cans), Ground Coffee (12oz cans), Macaroni and Cheese (8oz box), Oatmeal (1lb or less), Pasta (1 to 2lb
packages), Soup (10 to 18oz), White Flour (2 to 5lb bags), Peanut Butter and Jelly.
Household items are also needed and appreciated – these include: Dish Soap, Laundry Soap, Hand Soap,
Shampoo, Deodorant, Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, Kleenex, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes.
You will notice the weekend of Pack the Pantry that future members of the Men’s Club of St. Mary’s and
members of our local Boy Scout troop are helping with the food drive. If you are able, please bring a bag of
food or a bag of household supplies the weekend of January 27th and 28th to St. Mary’s. Please remember this
effort in prayer, that we may be a means of bringing nourishment to those in need, the hungry in our midst!
You are invited to attend the Chicago March for Life, today, Sunday, January 14th. A bus is leaving from
the Church of St. Mary parking lot following the 12:00 Noon Mass.
Thanks for your generous support to the Collection for the Church in Latin America. Many Catholics in
Latin America and the Caribbean do not have access to church programs and ministries because of rural ter-
rain and a lack of ministers. Your generosity makes it possible for them to share in the life of the Church and
grow closer to Christ. To learn more about the collection you can visit: www.usccb.org/latin-america.
God bless you with a joyous and renewed faith.
This January the St. Mary's Book Club will be reading Job, the book in the Old Testament that wrestles with the question of why bad things happen to a good person. All are welcome to discuss this beautiful poem under the guidance of Deacon Jack Herrmann. We will meet at 7:15pm (after Benediction) on four consecutive Wednesday evenings (January 10, 17, 24, 31) in the Church Com-munity Room under the Church sanctuary.
St. Mary’s Book Club
In a spirit of compassion, let us embrace all those fleeing from war and hunger,
or forced by discrimination, persecution, poverty, and environmental degradation
to leave their homelands. Pope Francis
We would like to share some good news about a young couple and their two little children,.They
are refugees who arrived from the Congo via Uganda on December 12, 2017. Catholic Charities
and 3 parishioners from St. Mary’s welcomed them on their arrival at O’Hare.
They are living in a nice apartment in West Rogers Park. A group from St. Mary’s delivered Christmas gifts to them the
week before Christmas. They were all smiles . . . and a bit overwhelmed!
Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program helps them get settled. St. Mary’s St. George Fund provides the funds
for 3 months rent for them, as well as basic furniture for their apartment. Loyola Academy supplied the “Welcome
Pack” which includes kitchen supplies, bedroom and bathroom accessories and other sundries. St. Elizabeth Circle
(Sharing Tree) provided them with gift cards. A St. Mary’s family provided them with Christmas gifts. Another parish-
ioner donated her “winnings” from her Circle’s raffle to the family. Members of the Refugee
Ministry also gave some gifts and a Christmas tree.
Our parish has been very generous. Although this family feels very welcome, can you imagine
the “culture shock” of coming here? Please keep them in your prayers.
THIS SUNDAY JANUARY 14 — March for Life Chicago 2018

Sheltering the World . . . one family at a time
On the third Friday of each month, St. Mary’s helps provide food and staff for the Most Blessed Trinity Soup Kitchen

around 7:15pm. Volunteers come and go at whatever times their circumstances require. Dinner is served from 5:30pm
until 6:30pm.
Before dinner, tables are set up, casseroles warmed, salads and other dishes prepared. Afterwards the facility is
cleaned up and equipment put away. Foods needed: meats, potatoes, pastas, vegetables, fruits, salads & casse-
roles. Please leave contributions at the Parish Office (201 E. Illinois Road) until 3:00pm Friday. We are grateful for
your gifts of food and volunteering. For information, please call Ellen Tierney at 847.295.4649.

Readings for the Second Week in Ordinary Time
Monday, January 15, 2018
1 Sm 15:16-23; Ps 50; Mk 2:18-22 New wine is poured into fresh
wineskins. As we begin a new year, it’s
time to freshen up. Don’t get bogged
down in your comfort zone. It’s time to
be flexible, not rigid; soft, not severe;
celebratory, not stern. Jesus, who self-
identifies as the bridegroom, flooded
the wedding feast at Cana with new
wine. Today, he invites us to the joy of
the Gospel that has been the theme of
Pope Francis since the beginning of his
papacy. We may be in the season of
Ordinary Time, but the rule of the day
is the extraordinary mission that lies
ahead, both for Jesus and for us. There
will be setbacks, deep wounds, but just
remember: The wine is for pouring,
not for storing! Oh Lord, you are our
Father, our God, our Rock, our
Savior!
Tuesday, January 16, 2018
1 Sm 16:1-13; Ps 89; Mk 2:23-2 The Sabbath was made for man, not
man for the Sabbath. When even the
Lord of the Sabbath tells you to lighten
up, you better listen! The Pharisees,
constantly trolling Jesus, shame him
for his apostles’ snacking on the
Sabbath. They’re just plucking grain to
munch on as they walk through the
fields! That’s a sin? When Jesus cites
the precedent of King David taking the
temple offering to feed his starving
soldiers, he hints at the Eucharist, as
happens frequently in Mark’s Gospel.
So maybe access to the Eucharist is not
always a matter of sin/no sin. If the
Sabbath is for us, how much more the
Mass! If soldiers eat the sacred
offering, who am I to judge others
hungering for the body of Christ? O
God, you are our refuge and our
fortress, our stronghold, our deliverer,
our shield in whom we trust!
Wednesday, January 17, 2018
1 Sm 17:32-33, 37, 40-51; Ps 144;
Mk 3:1-6
Saint Anthony, Abbot Stretch out your hand! For the
Pharisees, Jesus is “fake news.” Even
when they witness a miracle, as today
in the healing of a man’s withered
hand, they see it only as a threat to
their privilege. Of course, what really
galls them is Jesus’ in-your-face
attitude. “Looking around at them with
anger and grieved at their hardness of
heart,” Jesus defies their smugness as
he, according to them, defiles the
Sabbath, just to save life. Bottom line:
They conspire to kill him. I guess
that’s what happens when you cast
your lot with the poor and those who
live on the margins. I’m pretty timid,
by comparison. I wonder if I could
stretch out my own hand. O God, you
are our refuge and our fortress, our
stronghold, our deliverer, our shield in
whom we trust!
Thursday, January 18, 2018
1 Sm 18:6-9; 19:1-7; Ps 56; Mk
3:7-12 The unclean spirits would shout, “You
are the Son of God!” Jesus does not
want the demons to make him known,
but his mission is no secret. The
crowds are so eager, thick and needy
that they threaten to crush him. A lot
of us, I guess, would find such
unbridled enthusiasm unseemly. We
prefer to maintain a sober distance,
rather than pressing to touch him. Lest
our fervor brand us as fundamentalists,
we keep our openness to all points of
view. Okay, we shouldn’t turn Jesus
into a winning lottery ticket, but
neither should we quench the fire
within, burning with God’s mercy. O
God, you have rescued me from death,
my feet, too, from stumbling.
Friday, January 19, 2018
1 Sm 24:3-21; Ps 57; Mk 3:13-19 Jesus summoned those whom he
wanted, and they came to him. Today,
Jesus designates his Twelve, his
apostles, a motley crew, to be sure,
including Judas Iscariot, who later
betrayed him, lest anyone assume their
incorruptibility. But no women are
mentioned. His mother was in a
separate category. Mary Magdalene
would receive her commission at the
empty tomb. Paul, a late-comer
himself, would be schooled by other
women, like Prisca and Phoebe, all
over the Mediterranean Basin. You
might say Pope Francis is taking
Romans 16, the grand catalog of
collaborators, as his modus operandi to
enlist anyone and everyone into the
mission of the church. Meanwhile, is
Jesus summoning me? Does Jesus
want me? Have mercy on me, O God,
have mercy on me, for in you I take
refuge!
Saturday, January 20, 2018
2 Sm 1:1-4, 11-12, 19, 23-27; Ps
80; Mk 3:20-21 Again the crowd gathered at the house,
making it impossible for them even to
eat. Mark’s Gospel is the original
“Fast and Furious.” Even Jesus’ family
can’t keep up with him. Tradition says
that for 30 years the loudest noise he
made was with a hammer and saw.
Now, he is trapped in a maelstrom,
“He is out of his mind!” I guess a lot of
us prefer a tranquil Jesus. Flannery
O’Connor in Wise Blood “saw Jesus
move from tree to tree … a wild
ragged figure.” Holden Caulfield self-
identifies with, “next to Jesus, was that
lunatic and all, that lived in the tombs
and kept cutting himself with stones,
that poor bastard.” Indeed, a catcher in
the rye, sacrificing everything to save
the poor in peril, will always seem
“insane.” O Shepherd of Israel, rouse
your power, and come to save us!

Throughout the school year, St. Mary’s offers Children's Liturgy of the Word on Sundays during the 10:00am Mass for all children of the parish age 4 through 5th grade. Dedicated catechists lead this age-appropriate time to help our young ones understand the Sunday Scriptures and to reflect on how they are called to live the message in their day to day ac-tivities. Children are invited and encouraged to join in each week they are present at Mass.
What happens during the Children’s Liturgy of the Word?
After the opening prayer, the Presider calls the children and the Children's Ministers forward and blesses them. The children follow their leader to the school building and assemble in the Multi-Purpose room where the Sunday Scriptures are read from the Children's Lectionary; included are the Old Testament Reading, Responsorial Psalm, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel Proclamation, Reflection, Creed and the Prayer of the Faithful. Everyone returns to the assembly during the Presentation of the Gifts as together we contin-ue to celebrate the Eucharist around the table as one family of faith.

“Jesus turned and saw them following Him and said to them,
‘What are you looking for?’” JOHN 1:38
What are you looking for? Are you wasting your time looking for the material
comforts of the world? Or, is your heart longing for something deeper that can on-
ly be found by spending time with God? Take time, each day, in silence and ask
the Lord what it is that He wants you to do.
