Becoming aSunday School Teacher

(Week 2)

Time: 11:15AM

Welcome to the 2nd. Week of RiverKids teachers training!

Please say Hi to each other. Do you remember each other's name?

Week 1: Teaching Principles and Techniques

Week 2: Hands on Lesson Plan on 3/30 materials

Week 3: Leading Age Specific Group Discussions

Week 4: Practice Makes Perfect

Week 5: Real Class Teaching

Class Agenda

Last week we covered some teaching principles and techniques.

This week, we'll do a deep dive on lesson plan preparations. This is probably the most time consuming aspects of teaching. Usually, I spend 2hrs x 2 nights per week to prepare lessons. And only 30 minutes to teach.

But before we start with new topic, let's briefly review what we covered last week.

Review

• Why Do We Teach?– For life-long impact on the kids!

• Why Aren't We Teaching?– Stage fright, language barriers, Bible

knowledge.

• Kids Perception– Right cognitive level for an ABC

church.

Review (cont'd)

• Interact with the kids– Introduce yourself in class; call them by name;

remember to smile!

• Class Participation– Ask questions instead of giving

answers.

– It's supposed to be fun!

Split groups into K-G1, G2-3, G4-5.

Q: How many times did Jesus tell Peter to forgive?A: 70 x 7 = 490 times.

Today, we won't have time to forgive people 490. We'll try 77 times instead.

In your group, try to form the number 77 with all numbers available to your group.

Example:● Age● Number of fi ngers● Dollar bills :)

The fi rst group to get the number 77 wins!

Main Theme

• Q: What's this month's theme?– Forgiveness

• Q: What's this week's Bible Story?– Zacchaeus

• Q: What's this week's “bottom line” ?– “When people are forgiven,

it can change them.”

We can quickly find out this month's theme by watching the Preview video clip made available on 252 Basics website.

There's always a month theme, a weekly Bible story and a weekly “bottom line”.

For those who have read through the materials I uploaded last week, let's see if you can answer these questions.

The nice thing about 252 Basics is that the format is identical week after week. So after some practice, you can skim through a lot of content really quickly.

The story part is always on page 3.

Unfortunately, that's pretty much the information you'd get regarding the story. You'll need to do some studies to fully understand the story.

First, we can identify this month's theme on page 3.

This week's Bible story is also on page 3.

Unfortunately, 252 Basics doesn't give any information on how to tell the story. It relies on your creativity to tell the Bible story vividly.

252 Basics doesn't offer too many slides either.

Just one cover page...

And one for each week's bottom line.

Each week's bottom line could be very useful during the “Review” session at the beginning of the class.

• Challenges:– Limited comprehension.

– Limited time.

– Even Jesus used parables!

• Use Images• Use Videos• Use Prop

– Only if you're good with it! :)

Telling the Story

Telling Bible stories using images:

Here's an example of telling the story on the parable of the seeds

. The farmer prepared the land for sowing.

He carried the seed to the field.

He sowed the seed in the field.

Some seed fell by the wayside and the birds came and ate them.

Some fell on stony places, where they did not much earth.

They sprang up but they had no root and they withered and died.

Some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them.

Others fell on good ground and yield a crop.

Some made a hundred fold.

Some made sixty fold and some made thirty fold.

• Use Images– A picture is worth 1,000 words!

– Specially important when explaining abstract concepts.

Telling the Story

Give examples of kindness?

What's the opposite of kindness?

- Harsh

- Rude

- Mean

To do the right things:

=> Tell the truth.

=> To share

Opposite: EVIL / BAD things.

=> Lie
