For several years, BRHA staff, Utah State University students, and community volunteers, have worked to locate and document over 150 cemeteries in the seven counties of the Bear River Heritage Area. This includes Box Elder, Cache and Rich Counties in northern Utah; and Oneida, Caribou, Franklin and Bear Lake Counties in southeastern Idaho. Because of the close proximity to the Bear River drainage, a few cemeteries in the bordering counties of Cassia, Bannock, and Bonneville in Idaho; and Lincoln County in Wyoming are included.

The purpose of the project is to raise awareness of the need for cemetery preservation, and to provide a useful directory, which pulls together information already available at Utah and Idaho State Archives and various web resources, and information obtained during fieldwork. Each cemetery has been visited in order to know the spot first-hand, and to provide the most up-to-date information possible. The fieldwork is ongoing as new questions and avenues of study come to light. The fieldwork product includes photographs and notes about interesting gravesites and gravestone art, historical figures and events, and earliest burial dates. These items will be archived at the office of the Bear River Heritage Area and Utah State University Special Collections.

Some of the cemeteries in the Bear River Heritage Area are large, well-established sites currently in use and governed by a local cemetery district; while others are small family cemeteries established in the early 1900s, located on private ground and looked after by some kind community or family member. Some of the most culturally significant sites are the Shoshone tribal cemetery at Washakie in Utah, representing the earliest of the region’s population, and the many nearly forgotten pioneer burials in remote places, representing those who emigrated here from different countries, seeking to establish a homestead. In northwestern Box Elder County, for example, the now abandoned railroad towns of Kelton, Lucin, and Terrace all have burial sites. In order to provide the most accurate information, several sites that are reported to be burials, but with little or no documentation to prove or disprove their existence were not included.

Why do people like cemeteries, and why travel to see one? No matter where they are located, what type or how many people are buried there, cemeteries are interesting places that provide a glimpse into a community’s cultural underpinnings.

Cemeteries are an attraction to people for several reasons:

• To pay respect to loved ones • Genealogical research • Research gravestone art• Headstone and cemetery grounds preservation• Local and regional history research• To better understand cultural perspectives• They can be places of solace and introspection

The printed directory includes the names and telephone contact for each cemetery, the location in latitude and longitude, plus a numbered location on the fold-out map. Cemeteries are organized by regions of the Bear River Heritage Area and by county, alphabetically, with their accompanying map number. On the list, a cemetery located on private ground is labeled “private”, indicating a request for travelers to call the contact number before visiting.

The street addresses (where applicable), and more information about each cemetery is available on the web at www.bearriverheriage.com. Information about sites not verified, difficult to find, without a caretaker, or in case of a non-working number, may be obtained by calling the office of the Bear River Heritage area at 435.713.1426.

The Bear River Heritage Area would like to thank the following persons for the generous donation of their time and resources in helping to complete this project: Carl Aldrich, Vern Anderson, Laree Bergholm, Susan Bodrero, Bott Monuments, Coralee Campbell, Ken Christensen, Penny Douglass, Janis Durfee, Lisa Duskin-Goede, Penny Fox, Myrna Fuller, Ron Goede, Michael Gottfredson, Cheryl Harris, Susan Hayward, Aaron Hill, Keith Hirst, Chuck Kimber, Byron Knutsen, Ed and Mary Lisota, Diane Lloyd, Stan Lloyd, Lewis Nelson, Tamera Newman, Darlene Rommell, Alan Smith, Verl Smith, Dee Ann Spencer, Linda Tadd, Patty Timbimboo, RaNae Tracy, Tony Varilone, Julie Williams, Clarence Wilson.
