What is a menstrual cycle?
The menstrual cycle is the series of changes awoman's body goes through to prepare for apregnancy. About once a month, the uterusgrows a new lining (endometrium) to get readyfor a fertilized egg . When there is no fertilizedegg to start a pregnancy, the uterus sheds itslining. This is the monthly menstrual bleeding(also called menstrual period) that women havefrom their early teen years until menopause,around age 50.

Puberty andadolescence
vitamin and mineral needs, particularly iron, calcium and Vitamin A
Pregnancy Increased caloric requirements must be met through high-nutrient and
high- fibre foods like whole grains (millets, whole wheat, wheat germ,
amaranth, ragi and oats), nuts, dry fruits, eggs, fatty fish, skimmed milk,
fruits, vegetables etc.
Protein requirements also increase marginally (15-20gm/day). A well-
planned vegetarian diet should include pulses, soy, daals, sprouts, low
fat milk, yogurt, tofu, nuts and seeds.
Lactation Diet with essential fats, iron, Vitamin C and calcium-rich foods
Menopause A diet rich in whole grains, pulses, especially soy, fruits and vegetables,
low-fat dairy foods, nuts and seeds with limited intake of sugar, salt,.
Useful nutrients include calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper, Vitamin
D, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamins B6, B 12, E and K, phyestrogens, essential
fats and bioflavonoids.

Soy, low fat dairy, lean meat and fish. Essential fatty acids (linoleic and alpha-linoleic acid)
Fatty fish, flaxseeds, evening , mustard oil, methi seeds, soybean, and green
leafy vegetables.
Vitamin A
Fish liver oil, liver, carrot, berries, melons, peppers, broccoli, cabbage,green leafy vegetables, papaya, mango, tomato, yellow pumpkins.
Vitamin C
Citrus fruits (orange, lemon), guava, amla, papaya, broccoli, berries, green
leafy vegetables.
Vitamin DSun exposure, fortified milk, eggs and fish oil.
Vitamin E
Vegetable oils (sunflower, safflower, soybean), butter, nuts, wheat germ,
whole grain cereals, eggs, green leafy vegetables
