Father• Barack Obama,

Sr., was born of Luo ethnicity in Nyanza Province, Kenya.

• He grew up herding goats with his own father, who was a domestic servant to the British

• Ann Dunham, grew up in Wichita, Kansas.

• Her father worked on oil rigs during the Depression.

• Dunham’s mother went to work on a bomber assembly line.

• Parents separated before he was born, and Obama moved to Hawaii with his mother

• When he was six Obama’s mother remarried an Indonesian oil manager and they moved to Jakarta

•Later returned to Hawaii •Raised largely by his grandparents, who were an insurance agents and a furniture salesman.

•He was enrolled in the fifth grade at the esteemed Punahou Academy•Graduated with honors in 1979•He was only one of three black students at the school

The only time his father visited was

• Met Michelle Robinson, a fellow Harvard graduate in 1988

• Returned to Chicago and worked a civil rights lawyer

• Helped organize voter registration drives during Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign.

Senator• Ran and won for

Illinois State Senate seat in 1996

• Served as chairman of the Public Health and Welfare Committee.
