Gold was discovered in Australia in 1851 and gold fever gripped theimagination of thousands of people from around the world who flockedto the Australian goldfields.   At the gold diggings there were tent cities,and popular dances and musicians. By the 1880s Melbourne was on its way to becoming the richest cityin the world, with grand new buildings, paved streets and gas streetlighting, as well as subscription balls with fine clothes and jewellery.
