A REPORT
Review Workshop/ Development of
Pedagogical Methodologies
VENUE: SLS-DAV PUBLIC SCHOOL – MAUSAM VIHAR-DELHI
DATE: 19th -20th, SEPTEMBER, 2016
Session I: Ms. Deepti Gulati
The workshop started with the welcome address of the participants by Ms. Deepti Gulati,Genral Secretary AyurGyan Nyas through the Skype call. During this address Ms. Deepti Gulati welcomed the participants and thanked them for the continued support and commitment towards shaping the various sections of the Facilitators’ Manual. Ms. Gulati appreciated the output of the previous workshop and called it a great success. The materials developed by the teachers has been incorporated in the Manual.
Ms. Gulati continued that Ethics should be an integral part of any curriculum and AyurGyan Nyas is striving hard to fulfill the dream of HH Dalai Lama who in his two books “Ethics of the New Millennium and “Beyond Religion” gives an insight of how best virtues can be imbibed in our lives to make it more happy and peaceful. In the educational system we must know what to teach the children. Ethics should be part of the school curriculum and relationship between mind and emotions should come in the domain of education and not be limited to spirituality. The children should be taught the Ethics of Restraint by first understanding the emotions and then apply restraint in dealing with their negative emotions.
The belief that any one’s intrinsic nature cannot be changed has been negated by scientists who have proved time and again that it can be changed through changing ones habits and dispositions. Negative emotions like anger, envy or jealousy can be overcome by Virtues such as peace, Truth, patience etc. She mentioned about ‘SOPA’- which means active forbearance & patience - we all must cultivate the nature of acceptance, generosity and humbleness, and teachers must relate and imbibe all this in their write ups, like poems, stories and case
studies. She also asked participants to include Friendship as a virtue in the curriculum as this has been told specifically by HH Dalai Lama to be included as an important virtue.
A conference call with Ms. Anshu Sahi was set up where Ms. Sahi commented that the ‘Poems’ created during the 1st Workshop are very meaningful. She emphasized that ‘Care’ and friendship in Virtue should be added in the section “Ethics of Virtue”.
Session II : Ms. Piyali Acharya
The next session was on ‘Ice breaking’ by Ms. Piyali Through the technique of Appreciative Enquiry, the participants got to know each other by asking questions positively. The participants actively participated in the discussion and shared their concerns about the ethical conduct of
students and parents prevailing in the education system today. During the discussion, following concepts were introduced and discussed. She pointed out that we often neglect our inner emotions, by nurturing virtuous emotions within us.
Session III: Dr. Sudhir Kapoor
The next session set the tone for the workshop. Dr. Kapoor focused on ‘Gratitude’ and ‘Care’, how these two things may be implemented and felt within.
‘Care the care giver’ this was the opening point of Dr. Kapoor. How do teachers feel that they are being cared? Suggestions are to be drawn towards ‘care’ and to the teachers (the care givers). The mind should be prepared to receive/ adopt the ‘care’- looking after and caring are both different. He then talked about the Brain and the Mind. How does care create an effect on these two with some little gesture is shown that they care. He
mentioned that to practice Restraint and Virtue into creating a caring classroom.
Session IV: Asheema Singh
Ms. Asheema Singh started the session by reviewing the outputs of the previous workshop. She gave examples of how the cases and stories that were developed in the first workshop can be made open ended so that the facilitators and participants do not arrive directly to a conclusion by reading the stories/ cases etc.
Ms. Singh initiated the session through an interesting session. Each of the team members were asked to close their eyes and count numbers. Initially it was difficult for the team to synchronise, however in due course the team could get into the rhythm.
The participants were asked to articulate the different kinds of methodologies/ training materials that may be appropriate for the manual. And these were following points they have shortlisted like Story,
Poems, Situations, Slogan making, Captions, Games. Ms. Singh conducted a Buzz Session on adolescence. The participants came up with the following associated words: Teenage, Tantrums, Chinese whisper, Turbulence, Transform.
