Welcome to the College’s Annual Awards Ceremony

City College Plymouth is committed to improving the skills of our students, ensuring that they are work-ready. Our aim to be the South West’s leading provider of innovative, skills-based, vocational education and training, is built on a strong platform of mutual working relationships with employers, leading to a curriculum that is appropriate and effective in producing students who add value to local businesses and ultimately the regional economy.

Our new employability centre, theworkspace, is just one example of how these relationships are providing real benefits to City College Plymouth students. Another example is the continued success of our Apprenticeship programmes, which has seen a dramatic increase in numbers in recent years, whilst maintaining impressive achievement rates. Both of these schemes would not be possible without the support and passion of our local employers.

But tonight we are here to celebrate the achievements of students! Students who have excelled during their time at the College - many of them achieving their career aims and ambitions. Of course, these achievements would not be possible without the support of families and friends, our staff or their companies and organisations. At the end of the day, however, success is down to the dedication and determination of the individual, and I hope you will join with us this evening in applauding accordingly.

We are very fortunate to have the support of the City’s key organisations who sponsor our awards year-on-year.

I would especially like to thank our guest of honour, Professor Iain Stewart, for presenting the awards.

I hope you enjoy tonight’s celebration.

Iain Stewart is a Professor of Geoscience Communication at Plymouth University’s School of Earth, Ocean and Environment Sciences. As our guest of honour, Iain will be sharing with us his passion for geology.

Iain studied geography and geology at the University of Strathclyde, and then went on to gain at PhD in earthquake geology from the University of Bristol, spending time studying in Greece and Turkey. His teaching career began at Brunel University in west London as a lecturer in geology before he joined Plymouth University in 2004.

Iain’s love for geology has formed the basis for several landmark BBC television programmes, including Journeys From the Centre of the Earth, Making Scotland’s Landscape, How Earth Made Us and Earth: The Power of the Planet. Recently, Iain’s programmes have spanned the BBC’s channels and have focussed on climate change, including Earth: The Climate Wars on BBC2, Climate Catastrophe or Global Conspiracy on BBC4 and Hot Planet on BBC1.

We are delighted to welcome Iain as our guest of honour and hope that you enjoy his presentation.
