Avalonsoftwarereleasesarebecomingmorefrequent,withagoalofputtingoutatleastaminorreleaseeverytwomonths.Thisscheduleof features is subject to change as the community helps to shape Avalonpriorities.

What is the Avalon Media System?

TheAvalonMediaSystemisarobust,fullyopensourcesolutionforcuratingandprovidingonlineaccesstodigitalaudioandvideocollectionsinlibrariesandarchives.ThesystemisbeingdevelopedcollaborativelybythelibrariesatIndianaUniversityandNorthwesternUniversityinpartnershipwithtenadditionalinstitutionsthathavecommittedresourcesfortesting,evaluationand feedback.

The system leverages a number of other open source tools. In additiontotheHydraframeworkandBlacklightdiscoveryinterface,audio and video processing are based on technology from the OpencastMatterhornproject,metadatapersistenceisprovidedbytheFedoradigitalrepositorysystem,andmetadataindexingisprovided by Apache Solr.

ThearchitectureofAvalonisdesignedtobemodularandextensibleinordertosupportintegrationintoandwithotheracademicsystems, including integrated library systems, learning management systems,andeventually,scholarlyannotationandresearchtools.
