What Is Autism

?

Autism: (aw-tih-zum)

A neurological disorder which affects how a person interacts with their world

DID YOU KNOW

1 in 150 children are diagnosed with autism

Boys are 4 times more likely to have autism than girls

Approximately 67 children

are diagnosed

per day

That Means:

Every 20 Minutes A New Case is Diagnosed

DID YOU KNOW

More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with

AIDS, diabetes & cancer combined.

Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental

disability in the U.S.

Autism costs the nation over $35 billion per year

Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases.

THERE IS NO MEDICAL CURE OR DETECTION FOR

AUTISM

Leukemia affects 1 in 25,000 and

receives over $310 million

in funding

Muscular Dystrophy affects 1 in 20,000

children and receives $175 million dollars in

funding

Pediatric AIDS affects

1 in 8,000 kids.They receive

$394 million in funding

Juvenile Diabetes affects

1 in 500 and receives

$130 million in funding

Autism affects1 in 150 children.

Yet they receive only$42 million in funding.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

There is no known single cause for

autism.

It is generally accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in the brain structure

Brain scans show differences in the shape

and structure of the brain in children with autism versus neuro-typical

children.

Many kids with autism flap their hands

They speak without emotion and have odd speech patterns

They need to follow schedules or they feel the world is out of control

Early intervention is key in improving a child’s

overall prognosis.
