Howdy!Well, air conditioners are full blast, you can go to a restaurant without waiting an hour to get a table, and thousands of Aggies are transitioning to Former Students...It must be summer in Aggieland. Look over this issue, paying close attention to [What’s New with Mentors?] for some upcoming opportunities. Last month, the Student Counseling Service presented at the Brown Bag Lunch. Look over some information presented in the [Campus Highlight].This is the last issue of ATMentors Monthly until September, so stay up to date by visiting ATMentors.tamu.edu. [What’s New with Mentors?]Impact the Incoming Class of 2014!
The Aggie Orientation Leader Program (AOLP) hosts a student dinner at each of the Freshman New Student Conferences. We would like to invite ATMentors along with Academic Advisors, First Year Seminar Instructors, and members of the New Student Conference Committee to join us at dinner to help welcome our newest Aggies. We will only
be able to accept a limited number of faculty and staff members at each conference- so make sure you register early! Student dinner will take place at Duncan Dining Hall at 5 p.m. on Day 1 of New Student
Conferences (Tuesdays & Thursdays)

Mentors MarketingAre you wondering how the Office of New Student Programs will be
marketing ATMentors to the incoming students this summer? Each new student will receive a wristband like the one shown below and will be prompted to visit ATMentors.tamu.edu to fill out a survey
and be entered in a drawing to win a prize worth about $50. Also, If students visit the New Student Programs table during Gig
‘Em Week and show they are wearing the wristband, they will receive a free gift!

At the April Brown Bag Lunch Mrs. Sarah Ou-Young, a professional counselor with the Student Counseling Service (SCS), helped shed some light on services her office provides.
Services include: Individual Counseling, Group Counseling, Couple Counseling, and an endless number of workshops that include: Career counseling and testing services, Programs for Academic Success Skills (PASS), and Learning Disability and ADD/ADHD Screenings.
The SCS also helps with crisis situations. The Help Line is a telephone line for students to call for support, referral, and crisis intervention.(http://scs.tamu.edu/emergency/helpline.asp)
Sarah spoke to the ATMentors about mentoring techniques. Her main point was to refer and never try to counsel outside of your capacity. There are some helpful hints on the SCS website:(http://scs.tamu.edu/faculty/how_to_help_students.asp)
Please keep the SCS in mind as you’re mentoring over the summer and this fall. For more information and references, visit http://scs.tamu.edu/ or e-mail ATMentors@tamu.edu.Did you miss April’s Brown Bag Lunch? Don’t worry, we’ll see you in the fall!
