“Understanding Our Students, Understanding Ourselves…
The past decade has seen incredible growth in our Graduate and Professional (GnP) school student populations, which now represent the majority of our students. GnP students embody virtually every facet of diversity, including biographical, life experiences, and background. Coupled with their academic program diversity including: length, design, and expectations those working with this population have a monumental task. Knowing our students is a priority, as we serve, learn, and process their needs one trend emerges above them all.
Collaborating with the Office of Assessment and Professional Development Programs the Division is systematically looking into current services and outreach efforts. Focus groups and standardized questions were utilized in the Fall Semester with both our GnP students and Student Affairs departments.
Coordinating efforts is critically important, as our students’ change we must change our outreach and support models. That trend we noticed; personal, individual touch. Providing this service can be challenging on resources, but is necessary. Developing a systems approach along with structures and resources will be part of our next steps. Collectively, Student Affairs is developing a strategic plan for this population. Stay tuned as the plan develops, because implementation will be our collective responsibility.
In the interim, we invite you to share your stories and experiences working with graduate and professional
students. Additionally, I would like to challenge all in the Division to think critically about how we share information
and develop a framework that to support these students.
