Asian Pacific American Studies

misson The Asian Pacific American Studies (APAS) unit offers an interdisciplinary major, minor and certificate focused on demographic, cultural, historical, social, economic and policy issues that have shaped and continue to affect Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in Arizona, the Southwest United States, nationally, and internationally. Students will (1) learn the history of APAs in the country, (2) understand and relate the history to the contemporary moment, and (3) gain a set of knowledges that allow them to navigate a racially diverse job market and world. The minor may be taken as a complement to a major and does not require an internship. The certificate offers additional training opportunities for both degree- and non-degree-seeking students and requires an internship.

beyond the classroomAPAS offers many opportunities throughout the year for research, internships and community involvement. Students have worked with fac-ulty members on oral history projects, survey research, interviews, community histories and educational outreach. Internship opportunities include working with community health and advocacy groups, ethnic business organiza-tions and local media. Our graduates leave with knowledge about working with diverse popula-tions, an understanding of issues facing a range of AAPI communities and insights to the dynam-ics of community politics. Students have applied their knowledge from APAS in the fields of law, business, health, public policy and education.
