Arts Awards – in a Day!

InOctoberandNovember,youngmembersofOHMIMusicMakersgatheredinBirminghamandSurreytotrytoforan“ArtsAwardDiscover”-inaday.LedbyLizWrightonofBirmingham’sServicesforEducation,ouraspiringmusiciansspentthedaymakingandlisteningtomusic.TheyenjoyedafascinatingsessionwithKrisHalpin,themusicianandsingersongwriter,andheardfirst-handabouthiscareer.GuidedbyRachelWolffsohnandTimLowfromOHMI,theyoungsterswerenotshyinaskingKrissearchingquestionsabouthislife,andtheyalllovedtryingoutthehi-tech(andOHMIawardwinning)Mi.Muglovesheusestomakemusic.Holst’sMarsfromThePlanetsSuite-oneoftheBBC’sTenPieceswasthenusedasthestimulusfortheirowncomposition.Attheendoftheday,andtorapturousapplause,theyperformedtheircompositiontoparentsandorganisers–justrewardtoallthehardworkandstudythathadgoneintothisenjoyableday.CertificateswillsoonbeawardedbytheArtsAwardorganisation,butwehopethatthiswillbejustthestartoftheirmusicalachievements.

A Call for Papers and Presentations - Music & Physical Disability: From Instrument to Performance

OHMI Founder Raises £5,000 in the Great Birmingham Run

“Thebarefactsarethese:myrunraisedjustabout£5,000,ittook2hoursand22minutes,andmyinjuriesarenotexpectedtobepermanent.Iliketothinkthatallmywonderfulandgeneroussponsorswillfeelthatthey’vehadtheirmoney’sworth:thoselookingmerelyforcompletion,adecenteffort,shouldbewellsatisfied,whilethosehopingtohearstoriesofpainandsufferingshouldbeequallypleased.I’llexplain.Ithadbeen35yearssinceIlastranregularly(I’mnow68,bytheway).InthosedaysIcouldrunamilecourseinabout5minutes.WhenIstartedtrainingforlastyear’sBirminghamevent,Icoulddonobetterthanamilein12minutes–andthatwasontheflat.BythestartoftheBirminghamrun,thingshadimprovedsomewhat.Infact,Ihadstrong(ifnaive)hopesofmanagingthewholecourseinaround90minutes.Ifyoudon’thaveyourcalculatortohand,that’samileevery7minutes.AndIdidsetoffatthatpace.Twomilesin(Ishouldemphasisethat–onlytwomilesin)apainfulknotinmycalfhadmeprotectingmyrightlegwithalimp.Thepainthenbecameincreasinglyworseoverthecourse,suchthat

thelasttwoorthreemileswerequiteexcruciating.Worse,addedtowhatIlaterlearnedwasatornmuscle,mykneejointexploded(no,notliterally)inastingingpain.This,itturnedout,wasatornmeniscus.MedicalexpertstellmeitcouldbeSpringbeforeitallheals.Anyway,thegoodnews(formeatleast)isthatInowfeelmuchmorenoblethatevenaworldrecordtimewouldhavejustified.”

OHMI Music Maker Selects Music for her DofE Award

Honorisa14-year-oldstudenttakingtrumpetlessonswithMissGillUnderwoodfromSurreyArtsaspartofourteachingprogramme.Herquadriplegiafromcerebralpalsyaffectsallherlimbs,makingcontrolofthetrumpetdifficult.SinceSeptember2016HonorhasbeenusinganOHMItrumpetstandandbrackettotaketheweightoftheinstrument,allowinghertoapplyherstrengthtocontrollingthevalves.ThroughtheSurreyteachingpilotshehasattendedaworkshopledbyMikeAllen,trumpetplayerintheRoyalPhilharmonicOrchestraandcompletedanArtsAwardDiscovercourseledbyLizWrightonfromServicesforEducation.WewerereallydelightedtohearthatHonorhaschosentodevelopherskillsfurtherforherDukeofEdinburgh

BronzeAward.Shesays:“It’squitealotoffunlearningthetrumpet.IthasgivenmeachancetojoinotherclubsthatIwouldn’tnormallyjoin.”Honor’sMum,Leanda,added“IthasbeengoodforHonortofeelasenseofachievement.”

2018 London Marathon Update

We’repleasedtoannouncethatonSunday22ndApril,BenLowewillberunningtheLondonMarathonforOHMI.Benisakeenmusician,playingthetrumpetanddrumsforover10years,andisstudyingphysicsatCardiffUniversity.SowhyhasBengotmarathonfever?Heexplains:“IdecidedtotakeonthechallengebecauseI’vealwaysenjoyeddoingcrosscountryandothershortdistancerunning.AftermyDadbecameinvolvedwithTheOHMITrustandIheardaboutthemarathon,itseemedliketoogoodanopportunitytomiss.Ithoughtitwouldbeagreatopportunitytopushmyselftothelimitaswellasfundraisingforagreatcharity.I’mverythankfultohavethisopportunityandI’mlookingforwardtorepresentingOHMIatsuchaprestigiousevent.”BenLowe
