I’mhappytowelcomeyoutothe2018-2019schoolyearatUMassBoston.ThefacultyandstaffoftheArtDepartmentareexcitedabouttheyearahead.Asyou’llseeinthisnewsletter’s“FacultyNews,”thedepartment’sprofessorshavebeenbusyasusual–presentingtheirresearchatconferencesandsymposia,curatingexhibitions,writingandpublishingbooksandarticles,andexhibitingtheirartingalleries,museums,andatfilmfestivalsintheUnitedStates,Europe,andAsia.Returningtocampus,ourprofessorswillbeofferingtheirtypicallyrichvarietyofcoursesinstudioartandarthistory.

Beyondtheknowledgeandcreativitybeingsharedinourclassroomsandstudios,thedepartmentcontinuestosponsortheannualVisitingArtistLectureSeries,organizedbyChristopherSchade.Thisfallwewelcomethreevisitingartists:JamesBills,GinaRuggeri,andNormParis.Also,theUniversityHallGallery,underthedirectorshipofSamToabe,ishostingseveralexhibitions:MonsterA.,acollaborationbetweenVictoriaFuandMattRich;DreamsWithin,showcasingtheworkofincarceratedartists;FromTheorytoPractice:TrajectoriesoftheWhitneyIndependentStudyProgram,organizedbyJohnTysonandSamToabe;andthefirstNewEnglandsoloexhibitionfortheartistJoiriMinaya.Capstone’19,theannualexhibitionofworkbystudentsinthestudiocapstonecourse,concludestheschoolyear.

Thisfall,wewelcometwonewadjunctinstructors.JungminLee,arecentPh.D.graduateinFilmandVisualStudiesatHarvard,willteachART250:ArtoftheTwentiethCentury.AndSofieHodara,whoearnedherM.F.A.inVisualCommunicationfromMassArt,willteachabrandnewcourse–ART210:IntroductiontoGraphicDesign.

EspeciallynoteworthythisyeararetheaccomplishmentsofProfessorErikLevine.NotonlywashisvideoworkfeaturedinamajorexhibitioninGermany(accompaniedbyanin-depthcatalog)buthewasalsopromotedtotherankoffullprofessor.CongratulationstoProfessorLevine!Finally,itismypleasuretospotlight(seethephotototheright)andthanktheoutstandingArtDepartmentstaff–thetalented

DavidS.ArefordThispastyear,DavidArefordcompletedtheessay“ChristChildCreator”whichwillbepublishedinQuidestsacramentum?OntheVisualRepresentationofSacredMysteriesinEarlyModernEuropeandtheAmericas,1400-1700,editedbyWalterMelion(Brill,2019).HecontinuestopursuevariousprojectsconcerningtheworkoftheAmericanconceptualartistSolLeWitt,includingtheexhibitionStrictBeauty:SolLeWittPrints,organizedbyWilliamsCollegeMuseumofArtandnowopeningin2020.ThemainlenderfortheexhibitionistheNewBritainMuseumofAmericanArt,whichwillserveasasecondvenuein2022.Theexhibitionanditscatalogrepresentthefirstcomprehensiveinvestigationoftheartist’sprintmaking.Lastspring,he

organizedthesession“LocatingLeWitt:IssuesofSite,Space,andMovement”fortheannualmeetingoftheCollegeArtAssociation.ThesessionfeaturedAreford’spaper“LeWittMoves:ChoreographingthePrintedImage,”whichheisdevelopingintoanarticle.Inaddition,thissummerhecompletedadraftofanotherarticleentitled“VoicesBeyondtheWall:NotesonSol

LeWitt’sJewishArt.”Thisstudyexploresvariousartworks(includingwalldrawings,sculptures,andprints)inwhichLeWittrespondedtoissuesofJewishhistory,architecture,religioustexts,andcommunalmemory.Theseworksprovetobenotonlysurprisinglypersonalbutalsohighlypoliticalandhistoricalintheirmeanings.Duringthecomingyear,ArefordwillserveaseditorofLocatingLeWitt:BetweenMindandBody,acollectionofnewLeWittresearchfromeightcontributors,includingKirstenSwenson,VeronicaRoberts,AnnaLovatt,EricaDiBenedetto,JamesMiller,LindsayAveilheandJohnA.Tyson.Infall2018,ArefordwillteachART101:AncientandMedievalArt.

RenaissanceVenicewillbeavailableinOctober2018.Hehascontinuedtospearheadthenewly-formedMuseumPartnershipsCommitteeatUMassBoston,aninitiativeaimedatstrengtheningtheuniversity’sconnectionswithlocalmuseums,especiallytheMuseumofFineArts,Boston.Buonannoisonleaveforthefallsemesterbutwillreturnin

spring2019whenhewillteachART102:RenaissancetoModernArtandhisnewcourseART326:Materials,Materiality,andMeaning.KevinDaceyKevinDaceycontinuesasArtist-in-ResidenceattheRedwoodLibraryandAthenaeuminNewport,RI.Thispastyearhasbeenfocusedondevelopingapublicationofcollectedimages,newwork,andlong-terminterventionsthatwillbeinstalledthroughthefallof2018.Duringthispastsummer,twolarge-scalephotographicworkswereinstalledlinkingarchitectureandtextandimage,alongwithrelatedcompanionpiecesinvariousprinted

ZachHorncontinuestopursuevariousprojectsindrawing,painting,andstop-motionanimation.Thispastacademicyear,hecompletedasoloexhibitionattheCommonwealthMuseumtitledUnitedWeBargain,DividedWeBeginsupportoflocallaborunions.Healsoparticipatedintwogroupexhibitions,TimeMachinesatWorcesterStateUniversityandTransformationsatEasternKentuckyUniversity,forwhichhewasrecognizedwithaJuror’sChoiceAward.Heiscurrentlyworkingonasoloexhibitionthatwillopenthis winterattheUniversity of MaineMuseumofArtinBangor.

ErikLevineLastyearErikLevinepresentedhisworkinamajorsurveyexhibitionentitledErikLevine:AsaMatterofFactatLudwigForumAacheninGermany.Inaddition,hewaspromotedtotherankoffullprofessor.Theyearwaspartlyspentfocusingontheproductionofseveralcreativeprojects.HecompletedScenario,asinglechannelhighdefinitionvideoworkthatwasfilmedattheMassachusettsFirefightingAcademyinStow,Massachusetts.Inproductionforfouryears,theworkcontinuesLevine’sexplorationintourgentlifeanddeaththemes. Usingdummies,sets,andprops,itlooksatthetheaterofcalamitythroughstagedsituationsthatobscurethelinesbetweenfictionandreality.CurrentworksinprogressincludeOutofPlay,avideopiecethatwasfilmedfrom2014-2018withtwoSpecialWeaponsandTactics(SWAT)

teamsfromRochesterandMonroeCounty,NewYork.Foramonththissummer,LevinefilmedasherodeshotgunwiththeovernightshiftsoftheRochesterPoliceDepartment.Theresultingfootagewillbetransformedintoafuturevideowork.Levine’svideoswererecentlyselectedforinclusionintheDistributionProgramattheInterMediaArtInstituteinDüsseldorf,Germany.Asaresult,hisworkisnowincludedinanonlinecataloguecomprisingabout1200videoartworksbymorethan200artistsfromthebeginningofmediaartuntiltoday.Forfall2018,LevinewillteachART286:IntroductiontoContemporarySculpturalPractices

andART386:SculptureWorkshop.Inspring2019,hewillagainteachART286,aswellasART199:VisualThinking.ElizabethMarranElizabethMarranisreturningtocampusafteraproductiveyear-longsabbatical,duringwhichsheworkedonthreerelatedprojects:Wearegoodright?,adrawingandcollageseries;FearEatstheSoul,aseriesoftwo-dimensionalconstructionsfor a

portfolioofphotoetchings;andNotEnoughMother,anongoingseriesofsmall-scalepaintingsoncanvasandpaperthatexplorethepsychologicalunderpinningsofherworkthroughacombinationofabstractionandfiguration.Shebegantheyearwiththeproductionofintuitiveandfree-associativelarge-formatdrawingsandcollagesthatframedhercreativegoalsandhelpedanchorherconceptualinterests.Inthesevariousprojects,Marranmergeddisparateimagesintoloosevisualnarrativesthatarebroadlyaboutmemory,thepassageoftime,andthecelebrationoftheeveryday.Eachseriesischaracterizedbyodd,quirkyandplayfulvisualsensibilities.Aselectionofherworkwasfeaturedinthepop-upexhibitionofprintsTangibleProofattheModestinoGalleryinCambridge.HerworkisalsoincludedinthecurrentgroupexhibitionArtistsfromNewEnglandCollegesattheBerkshireArtMuseum.During2018-2019,shewillshowworkinexhibitionsinTurkey,Slovenia,andCroatia.InMay2018,MarranorganizedthethirdInternationalArtistsandUMBStudentPrintWorkshoponcampus.Theten-

CatMazza’snewestworkTakingtheCureiscurrentlyonviewattheDeCordovaMuseumandSculptureParkthroughJuly2019.Theoutdoorsculpturewascommissionbythemuseumandisinspiredbynineteenth-centuryNewEngland“curecottages,”openairporchesintendedtorehabilitateurbanworkerssufferingfromtuberculosis.ThewoodenstructureoverlooksthelakeintheparkwithsampleddetailsofMassachusettscurespacesthattakeshapeasawindowlessstructure,platform,andloungeporch.MazzaalsohasworkonviewattheMuseumofDesigninAtlanta,GA(June3,2018-September9,2018)intheexhibitionMakingChange:TheArtandCraftof

Activism.Atimelineof75yearsofcraftproducedbyTheAmericanCraftCouncilhighlightsoneofMazza’searlyartworks,NikeBlanketPetition,whichrepresents“craftivism”fortheyear2003.AforthcomingexhibitorganizedbyPeertoSpaceinBerlin,GermanywillhighlightoneofherembroideredanimationsFilmtoFiber(2005).Forthefall2018, MazzawillteachART297:IntroductiontoDigitalMediaArtandART397:DigitalMediaWorkshop,incorporatingprojectsusingdigital prints,animations,and lasercutprojects.Inspring2019,shewillagainteachART297,aswellasanewcourse,ART208:IntroductiontoContemporaryPracticesinFiberArt.Thenewcourseexplorestextilehistories,traditions,andtechniques,includingembroidery,handknitting,machineknitting,andthewaysfibermediacaninterfacewithdigitaldesign. VictoriaWestonVictoriaWeston’sprimaryresearchfocusthispastyearhasbeenpreparingalargeloanexhibition,Eaglemania:CollectingJapaneseArtinGildedAgeAmerica,openingatBostonCollegeinFebruary2019.Theexhibitioniscenteredonthecollege’smascot,alargeJapanesebronzeeagle,whichhasbeeninstoragefordecadesandisnowbeingrestored.TheexhibitionwillalsoincludeworksfromtheMetropolitanMuseum,WorcesterArtMuseum,andtheMuseumofFineArts,Boston.WestonintroducedtheexhibitioninatalkatHunterCollegeinOctober2017.Additionally,WestoncontinuesresearchonhernextmonographexploringtheworkoftheartcriticOkakuraKakuzō(akaTenshin),whowasoneofJapan’smostimportantinterpretersofitsarttoEnglish-speakingaudiences.Weston’sparticularaimistorecovertheroleNewEnglandwomenplayedinOkakura’sriseasaculturalcriticintheWest.Infall2018,WestonwillteachART104L:IntrotoEastAsianArtandART256:ArtsofJapan.Inspring2019,shewillteachART258:ArtsofChinaandART362L:JapanandtheWest(linkedtotheBostonCollegeexhibition).

OrganizedbyAssistantProfessorofArtJohnTysonandGalleryDirectorSamToabe,thisexhibitionbringstogetherworksbyfacultyandparticipantsofvariousgenerationsoftheWhitneyMuseum’sIndependentStudyProgram,whichhasservedasabreedinggroundforadvancedartandcriticalthoughtsinceitscreationin1967.Locatedbeyondthewallsofthemuseum,theprogramopensupanindependentspacefortheexchangeofideasbetweenemergingandestablishedartprofessionalshailingfromacrosstheglobe.
