PERFORMANCE NOTESSpirituals are often sung too quickly, and all four of these will have greater effect if sung slowly. The exception is "Fix Me," which can be performed at either a slow or fast tempo, depending on the circumstances. In general, though, the music and words of a spiritual can take on great power if performed at a slow pace, as each short phrase, sometimes just a word, takes on the weight of a full breath. This delivery can heighten in the singer's heart the sense of emotion, the meaning, and even the historical context of the song. This edition leaves tempo and dynamics to be decided primarily by the director and singers. What is right for the occasion, these singers, this congregation? Does it need accompaniment?
DEEP RIVERSing slowly; let the text determine tempo and rhythmic details where it seems natural and expressive (e.g., "riv-er" could be eighth followed by dotted quarter). If you wish to lengthen the piece, consider: 1. solo refrain (choir on neutral vowels), 2. choral refrain, 3. solo verse, 4. an alternative refrain, 5. verse with choir singing words, 6. an alternative refrain, and 7. repeat the refrain or a portion with the soloist.
This text is appropriate for funerals, late Ordinary Time, and services in times of crisis or war.
DONE MADE MY VOWTry the refrain at a fairly stately pace, with some breath at the punctuation, resuming a steady tempo at the start of each phrase. Allow for a little time before "O," and even take some time on the note, if it seems right with the group singing it. The text demands singing strongly, but a rendition could benefit from some variety in dynamics.
The verses should be a tempo, since the interpolated response needs to be predictable for the choir. The B naturals on "do believe" for the soloist can be bent downward toward Bb. The optional coda may work best if the choir sings softly to allow the soloist to be expressive. Fermatas in measure 23 are not out of place.
The text is suitable when expressing faith, certainty, and commitment, such as for rites of initiation, or after the priest's renewal of vows during the Chrism Mass.
FIX MEOf the four spirituals in this set, this one works at a fast tempo as well as slow. The occasion will determine the tempo (for a healing service, e.g., a slow tempo would be appropriate). A faster tempo invites more syncopation. Experiment and see what feels natural to the group.
The word “fix” is used in the sense of “prepare,” as in “I’m fixing to go.” The added text allows for more opportunities to use the spiritual, with the themes of initiation, Christian life, prayer, healing, or eternal life.
THERE IS MORE LOVE SOMEWHEREI have yet to find a tempo too slow for this lovely spiritual. The slower it is sung, the more expressive the sense of longing seems to be. The alternative refrain may require a steady tempo for a smaller choir, so that concealed staggered breathing isn’t too difficult to manage. There may be more rubato with a larger choir.
The text asks a rhetorical question that the singers answer silently. The question is more than rhetorical; there are times when love, hope, peace, and joy seem to have left us and we cannot see past the question. Times of crisis, violence, war, September 11 services, and memorials of tragedy are especially appropriate occasions for this piece.
