ARE YOU UP FOR A CAMP COUNSELOR JOB?

At summer camp, counselors take a hands-on approach to everything they do.

While most summer camp counselors are experienced campers who have reached the age and maturity level to take on greater responsibility, others are new to camp but love children and the outdoors.

Overnight expeditions are also part of the fun, and you should enjoy backpacking and camping in the wilderness.

As you think about putting in your application, consider your answers to these questions to help you decide if you have found the perfect summer job.

DO YOU LOVE THE OUTDOORS?

When campers aren’t sleeping, they are usually outdoors. Camp counselors plan and supervise activities such as:• Water skiing

• Hiking• Sports

Overnight expeditions are also part of the fun, and you should enjoy backpacking and camping in the wilderness.

When you love being outside, your enthusiasm contributes to the camp experience for every member in your group.

ARE YOU PURSUING A CAREER WORKING WITH CHILDREN?

Spending a summer as a camp counselor is a great way to gain experience working with children.

For this reason, people pursuing careers as teachers, nurses or coaches find that learning how to encourage and support children at camp provides them with skills that help them in their future careers.

DO YOU POSSESS SPECIAL SKILLS?

Training is always provided to summer camp counselors, especially in regards to safety.

However, it is always best if you possess a few talents that can be shared with the group.

For example, knowing how to play a guitar or keep rhythm on a tambourine is great for those campfire sing-alongs.

Alternatively, you may be an artist who will love setting up a few easels for your group to paint the scenic view of the mountains with watercolors.

CAN YOU PLAY MULTIPLE ROLES?

Throughout a day, you can expect to wear many hats as a camp counselor.

While you will have days off, most of the time you will be working as you rally up your group to wake up and head out of the cabin for breakfast.

During the day, you may lead a hiking expedition in the afternoon, do a silly dining hall dance in the evening and later find yourself consoling a child who is homesick at bedtime.

Since you never know what may be required of you, it is important to be flexible.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A MEMORABLE SUMMER?

Camp counselors bond with the children in their groups as well as with other members of the staff.

Friendships among staff members are quickly formed, and every day is filled with memorable events.

Whether you are going on your first white water rafting adventure with the campers or exploring a local town with your friends on a staff night out, you are always creating awesome memories.

When you love being outdoors and working with children, summer camp provides the perfect space to share your skills.

While the days really do fly by, each one will be filled with adventure along with learning opportunities that help develop your character.

From tie-dying t-shirts to trekking up a mountain trail, a summer spent as a counselor gives you countless opportunities to help others while also gaining skills that will help you in the future.
