Mediocrity has been on my mind a lot lately. With poor service delivery in both the public and private sectors running rife, dropping education standards and the stress that unchecked crime brings, how could it not be? Smug and arrogant as I am, it is easy for me to lambast those that suffer from the mediocrity virus.You’re, of course, smart enough to know that when I lash out, I’m just projecting, aren’t I?     Mediocrity has been on my mind a lot lately. With poor service delivery in both the public and privatesectors running rife, dropping education standards and the stress that unchecked crime brings, how could itnot be? Smug and arrogant as I am, it is easy for me to lambast those that suffer from the mediocrity virus.Youre, of course, smart enough to know that when I lash out, Im just projecting, arent I? I suffer from themediocrity virus too.I know that Im not always 100% present in every situation. I dont always bring my A-Game to everysituation, be it work, relationships, intellect, community and health.To be brutally honest, I sometimes just get through my day by the skin of my teeth. Its almost enough tomake me believe that I do have a guardian angel looking out for me. Because if it were only up to me, Iwould be floundering a lot more than I already am.But, its hard, isnt it saying No to mediocrity?It takes real guts, moral courage and risk to shun the virus.Why?Because, in the real world, the Utopian concept of excellence is shunned. Mediocrity is covertly encouragedbecause it allows things to run (not smoothly but run nonetheless). We like (or tolerate) the status quo sothat we dont rock the boat. We avoid having the courageous conversations with a wayward child, atroubled spouse and a non-performing employee because we are scared to upset the apple cart and actuallybring up issues that we have to face and resolve.In fact, those folks who do stand for something and say Enough, are vilified, shut up, fired andinstitutionalised. They hold a mirror up to us that we dont want to look at. Because to look at how we havesettled for less by swimming in the pool of mediocrity is just too much to withstand, isnt it?To be told that we can do more and be more is too much of a burden because it means that we will actuallyhave to come to terms with who we are, do some real work and use our given potential so that we canfulfill our destiny.Raising the bar and ridding ourselves of the mediocrity virus is messy, isnt it?Of course it is. But, may I suggest that we try it anyway because we only have one shot at this adventurecalled life. We may as well make every moment we have count and every moment we have, a moment tobe proud of.We werent created as Elbert Hubbard said in A Message To Garcia to give slipshod assistance, foolishinattention, dowdy indifference and half-hearted work.No, we were not designed to be average. We were designed to leave this world having given more than wehave gotten.     Moet werkgewers siektesertifikate wat deur tradisionele genesersuitgereik is, aanvaar? Terwyl daar tans nog geen sodanigeverpligting blyk te wees nie, sal dit na alle aanduidings binnekort'n werklikheid word. Met ingang van 1 Mei 2014 het sekerebepalings van die Wet op Tradisionele Gesondheidspraktisyns(die WTG) in werking getree. Die belangrikste gevolg hiervanis die stigting van die Tussentydse Raad op TradisioneleGesondheidspraktisyns van Suid-Afrika (die Raad). Met dieeerste oogopslag lyk dit asof die deur nou oop is vir geregistreerdetradisionele genesers om siektesertifikate as bewys van onvermoingevolge Artikel 23(2) van die Wet op Basiese Diensvoorwaardesvan 1997 uit te reik. (Ingevolge hierdie artikel sal 'nsiektesertifikaat slegs geldig wees indien dit uitgereik enonderteken is deur 'n persoon wat gesertifiseer is om pasinte tediagnoseer en te behandel en wat geregistreer is by 'nberoepsraad wat deur 'n Parlementswet daargestel is.) Dit blykegter dat werkgewers op hierdie stadium nie onder enigeverpligting staan om 'n siektesertifikaat deur enigeen wat voorgeeom 'n tradisionele geneser te wees, te aanvaar nie. Die redehiervoor is dat die WTG dit in die vooruitsig stel dat verskeieregulasies deur die Minister van Gesondheid in konsultasie metdie Raad gemaak gaan word. Hierdie regulasies sal, onder andere,die bestuur en beheer oor die registrasie, opleiding en gedrag vanpraktisyns hanteer. Die administrasie van gesondheidsorg deurtradisionele genesers is baie anders as vir konvensionele Westersemediese praktisyns. Die vraag is nou tot watter mate dit uit diewyse waarop tradisionele genesers gereguleer word, sal blyk. Ditsal interessant wees om te sien watter standaarde vir kwalifikasievir registrasie gestel sal word, asook hoe hulle gedrag gereguleersal word. Daar is rede tot kommer as 'n mens die mate waartoesiekteverlof reeds misbruik word in ag neem, ten spyte van dierelatief streng vereistes rondom die registrasie en gedrag vanmediese praktisyns wat tans ingevolge die Wet opGesondheidsberoepe van 1974 (die WGB) geregistreer is. Daaris ook die vraag oor of die inhoud van 'n sertifikaat inooreenstemming met 'n stel etiese rels voorgeskryf sal word,soos tans die geval is met gesondheidspraktisyns wat ingevolgedie WGB geregistreer is. Indien nie, is die potensiaal vir misbruikselfs groter. Wat moet werkgewers dus doen terwyl hulle wag virdie regulasies om uitgevaardig te word?'n Werkgewer wat 'n siektesertifikaat, uitgereik deur 'n persoonwat voorgee om 'n geregistreerde tradisionele geneser te wees,ontvang, hoef dit nie te aanvaar as bewys van siekte ingevolgeartikel 23 van die Wet op Basiese Diensvoorwaardes nie. Wanneerregistrasie egter moontlik word, kan werkgewers daarop aandringdat die sertifikaat n registrasienommer spesifiek met die Raadbevat (nie met enige ander geassosieerde liggaam nie).
