Science and Remote SensingHighlights

• C-ICE: NIC participation in CIS field experiment to collect data on the strength of decaying sea ice.

• NIC attendance at CIS sponsored polarimetry tutorial and workshop.• Implementation at NIC of CIS developed false color SSM/I ice

classes. • NIC/CIS participation in NASA Data Assimilation Workshop to

stress importance of data assimilation to operational sea ice analysis.

Iceberg CommitteeHighlights

• Renew agreement between USCG IIP and CIS.• Develop and implement a plan to verify the new

iceberg drift and deterioration model.– –using drifting buoys? dyeing icebergs?

• Develop protocol/procedure to implement SOLAS reg.6, Chap 5 (2002 changes) on cost recovery

• IIP aircraft visit to Ottawa (May 29-31) for technical exchange, media exposure for the collaborative activities of the JIWG

Concept

• ‘Virtual’ ice centre – build on strong cooperation of JIWG

• Combine the strengths of each nation’s center of excellence in sea ice analysis

• Provide the highest quality, consistent ice information products for North American waters
