Dear OLPH,
Happy Easter! That’s right. We are in the Octave of Easter. For 8 days (from Easter Sunday through Divine Mercy Sunday) the Church “holds us” in the moment of the Resurrection. “Octave” means 8 days. An octave is the Church’s way, liturgically, of extending our worship in one long Easter day. (Same is true for the Octave of Christmas.) Tomorrow (Monday of the Second Week of Easter) we move into the Easter Season, which lasts 50 days until Pentecost. So… Happy Easter!!
Based on the private revelation of Saint Faustina Kowalska, known as the Apostle of Divine Mercy, Pope Saint John Paul renamed today Divine Mercy Sunday. For nine days now, from Good Friday until today, those particularly devoted to our Lord’s Divine Mercy, have been praying a novena for the whole world. Each day of the novena a different group of people is presented to the Lord that He might shower them with his mercy. This afternoon from 2 to 3pm, those prayers conclude with adoration. Please come by and pray with us!
In 1980, just the second year of JPII’s pontificate, he wrote the encyclical, Dives in Misericordia, or, God Who is Rich in Mercy. There, he articulated that Jesus shows us the face of the merciful Father:
“Especially through His lifestyle and through His actions, Jesus revealed that love is present in the world in which we live - an effective love, a love that addresses itself to man and embraces everything that makes up his humanity. This love makes itself particularly noticed in contact with suffering, injustice and poverty - in contact with the whole historical "human condition," which in various ways manifests man's limitation and frailty, both physical and moral. It is precisely the mode and sphere in which love manifests itself that in biblical language is called "mercy.” (n.3)
After developing a beautiful meditation, JPII concludes, “For mercy is an indispensable dimension of love; it is as it were love's second name and, at the same time, the specific manner in which love is revealed…” (n.7) The whole document is worthy of your attention. I love that: mercy is love’s second name!
We perceive this “second name of love” from the foot of the Cross, when Jesus says, “Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do.” We see mercy in Jesus’ promise, “Today, you will be with me in paradise.” Mercy’s face shines in Jesus’ dialogue with Peter, “Do you love me?.... Feed my lambs.” And the forgiveness of our loving Father is on full display today in the Upper Room, when Jesus appears in their midst despite the locked doors and repeats “Peace be with you….Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” and breathing the Holy Spirit upon them, imparts the power to forgive and retain sins: “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”
The power and reality of this moment are unmistakable. These men who abandoned Jesus at the cross, those who were unfaithful (except John), are now given the power and responsibility to serve as instruments of forgiveness in the world. Those whose faults and failings are laid bare are commissioned to be missionaries of mercy. Sinners, sent out to share God’s forgiveness with the world. Such is the mercy of God! And such is the power and responsibility of the priest in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Happy Easter! Blessed Sunday of Mercy!

Benediction, The image: Jesus appeared to St.
Faustina in a vision, with his right
hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment
above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart,
symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our
salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that
“Jesus, I trust in you” be inscribed under his image. Jesus
asked that his image be painted and venerated throughout the
world: “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image
will not perish”. (Diary no. 48) and “By means of this image
I will grant many graces to souls.” (Diary, no. 742)
Dear Families of OLPH,
Our parish will be participating in the 2019 Day of
Service campaign "Hearts to Hospitals: Hearts to
Lead- Hands to Help" - helping children and their
families in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth & Ocean
Counties. Over the next few weeks, the 31 Catholic
schools in the Diocese of Trenton will be dedicating
themselves to a single service project. Students will
be creating "Thank you" cards for caregivers and
"Encouragement Notes" to be distributed to sick
children and their families in about a dozen hospitals
spanning these counties.
This year, the Diocese Catholic Schools Day of
Service- an annual effort first launched in 2015- will
feature the collection of gift cards and new toys that
will be donated to participating hospitals with the
aim of making time spent there by young patients
and their families more comfortable and pleasant.
The students of OLPH will begin today, by enlisting
the support of their families and parish community.
Toy Collection: All toys must be new/unused (no
stuffed animals please) ~ Coloring books, art
supplies, games, small toys, arts & crafts.
Gift Cards: Convenience stores, gas stations,
pharmacies, restaurants, coffee shops and grocery
stores.
Collections will begin tomorrow and conclude on
May 3rd, the official Day of Service, when all schools
will work together to assemble the donated items and
package them into gift bags for hospital patients.
All donations can be dropped off at the school office.
Thank you for your support in making this a great
success!

School News
Dear OLPH Families,
I trust you enjoyed a wonderful Easter with those you
hold most dear. Our school children will return from
spring break tomorrow. We excitedly welcome them
back and look forward to the final stretch of the
school year.
The month of May will be full of activity. Our
children have been busy preparing for the Bishop’s
Day of Service, Hearts to Hospitals, which is Friday,
May 3. Our students have already made quilts,
created greeting cards, and collected toys and gift
cards to share with children in local hospitals. If you
would like to donate a gift card to be included in this
project, please reach out to the school office or Mrs.
Kelly Spicer at kspicer@olphparish.com. Mrs.
Spicer is our faculty coordinator and Mrs. Shanon
Bianco is our parent liaison with the diocese for this
event. We are so thankful to them for leading our
school’s participation in this worthy project.
During the month of May, I am reminded of a day in
2002 when I was notified that my daughter’s school
principal had called and needed to speak with me
immediately. It was a frightening few minutes until I
was able to reach the school office and return her
call. What a relief when her concern was, “Lauren
refuses to eat Jesus’ body.” (For a second, I was just
relieved that neither of my kids were sick, injured, or
in trouble.) As you may have guessed, it was just
days before First Communion, and Lauren’s class
was practicing with unconsecrated hosts just as our
OLPH children did recently. After finally exhaling, I
thanked her for contacting me, assured her I would
address this, and returned to my own students.
That night I spoke to our pastor after our PTA
meeting. He assured me that he would stop at the
school in the morning and talk to my daughter. She
happily came home the next day and said,
“Mom, you know Jesus comes to us in many forms.
I am ready for Saturday!” This announcement was
made with every ounce of her seven-year-old
confidence, since she surely believed she was telling
me something I did not know. I am unsure of the
exact details of the conversation she had with this
dear priest, but I will be forever grateful that he was
involved in the school my children attended. He has
long since retired as pastor, and I am many years
beyond being a second-grade parent, but the lessons
learned have stuck with me, and the blessings of their
Catholic school education have had lasting influence
on the adults my children are now. I will never regret
the sacrifices this choice required.
We at OLPH are equally blessed with Fr. Wilson’s
ministry as a pastor who supports our school. Fr.
Wilson communicates with faculty, visits the school
regularly, and has even taught in many of our
classrooms. Our whole school community thanks
him for his commitment and we celebrate his new
role as pastor. I trust that one day parents will retell
stories of how he positively impacted their children’s
lives, just as I do of the gifted Monsignor Mannion
who got my daughter over her First Communion
jitters.
Our OLPH school second-graders will join their
PREP peers and receive Eucharist for the first time
next Saturday. Their First Holy Communion mass is
May 4 at 10:30 AM. We pray that Jesus will always
stay in their hearts and guide their footsteps.
Lord Jesus, Bless the children coming forward to
receive Holy Communion for the first time on
Saturday. May it be an initial step into a lifelong love
of the Eucharist. Give them a hunger for this sacred
food so that they turn to you for comfort, guidance,
and wisdom as they grow into full discipleship.
Thank you for their innocence and goodness. May
their hands, extended in anticipation of your Body
and Blood, inspire all of us to cherish this sacred
sacrament. Amen.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Mrs. Cynthia Smith
I was in prison and you visited Me!
The Diocese of Trenton Jail & Prison Ministry is in
great need of volunteers to visit our incarcerated brothers
and sisters, to remind them of God’s great love and
mercy for them. We serve multiple State and County
Correctional Centers as well as the Federal Prison at Ft.
Dix. Our volunteers conduct Communion Services,
Bible Studies and Prayer Services, as well as offering the
gift of Listening and Pastoral Presence. If you are
interested in sharing faith, hope and love with this often
forgotten population, we will be conducting information
sessions throughout the Diocese. Please call the
Ministry Coordinator,Peter Haas at 609-403-7198 or
email him at phaas@dioceseoftrenton.org. Please
leave your name, phone number, email and parish. We
will contact you with the date, time and location of the
information sessions. Thank you.
