My current recognition efforts

1. I know how each of my employees like to be recognised

2. I offer FIVE times more praise than criticism3. I consistently recognise people in a timely manner4. I reward behaviours that are linked to specific

organisational values5. I show appreciation to each of my employees every

week6. I recognise little improvements, as well as the big

ones

What about me?

Good leaders don’t need reminding of the power of praise. They seem to know instinctively that praise isn’t merely a reaction to great performance; it is the cause of it.

It’s not this either…

THE FOUR ENABLERS OF ENGAGEMENT

ENGAGING MANAGERS

43

What gets in the way?

>8

‘Spare me another **** HR/comms,HQ initiative’

‘We’re too busy for that!’

‘We’re brilliant already! We don’t need to change’

‘Don’t you know there’s a recession on?’

‘I’ve not got time for the soft and fluffy stuff’

‘That won’t work here’

What else gets in the way?

>8

Leader behaviours don’t model the values

Too impatient –this needs time, application, relentless focus

Micro-managing –it’s stifling and drains everyone’s energy

People skills for the line – this is tough, they may need help

Not sharing good practice – where it’s working, showcase and share

Command and control – it’s easier!

Survey & event based, transactional

What can YOU do?

Easy ways to start building a better place to work:

•Say thank you!

•Be VISIBLE and accessible - open the office door, go and talk to people

•Accept that it’s more emotionally demanding

•Starting working on your own self awareness - none of us are perfect!

•Good leaders welcome challenge, they don’t close it down
