Since being approached to get involved in the inaugural aSia pacific ireland buSineSS forum (apibf) in Singapore in 2007, I have been pleased to lend whatever modest support I could to what I feel is a timely and imaginative initiative to bring together Irish businesspeople based in Asia on the occasion of the annual Asian Gaelic Games.

Building on the successful APIBF in Singapore and subsequent events in Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong, the annual APIBF has evolved into the most important gathering of Irish buinesspeople based in Asia Pacific and the Gulf. Our unique event at Croke Park hosted by Christy Cooney and the GAA makes excellent use of the APIBF as a platform to support Irish business and fits well with the GAA’s special role in Irish society. I would hope that, like the event in Asia held on the eve of the Asian Gaelic Games, it will become an annual fixture in the GAA calendar.

I am also pleased to have been able to see at first hand the vital role that the APIBF members have played in helping the embassies and state agencies in their efforts to expand Irish trade with the Asia Pacific and Gulf regions.

I believe that the future offers great potential and I know that those involved in leading the APIBF – based in Asia and Ireland – are ambitious about improving the links with the Irish business sector and the ‘take aways’ of the APIBF events.

Finally, one of the features of the APIBF has been the quiet, low key but effective way in which it has drawn together a broad range of people based across the dynamic Asian region.

The event at Croke Park is once again very much a collective effort with co-founder Peter Ryan being joined by group chair Rob Agnew; Conor O’Mara and Padraig Walsh (Hong Kong); Micheál Collins and Paraic McGrath (Singapore); Kieran Brennan (Vietnam); Paul Scales (Thailand); and Martin Murray (Ireland).

Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved in making the APIBF a reality in Asia and Ireland, and in putting together this valuable directory which will be a resource for anyone interested in pursuing business in the Asia Pacific and Gulf regions.

The Asia Pacific Ireland Business Forum creates synergies between the growing GAA and business networks in the region

What is the asia Pacific ireland Business forum

The Asia Pacific Ireland Business Forum (APIBF) is the first event of its type in the world focused on building connections between

and with the GAA clubs and business groups based in the Asia Pacific and Gulf regions.

The concept was introduced by Peter Ryan, who has been involved with the GAA in Asia since 1997 and was a founder member of the GAA’s Asian County Board. Ryan was also closely involved with the Irish business groups in Japan, Korea and Singapore.

Ryan recognised the potential synergies between the growing GAA and business networks in the region and, at his instigation in 2007, the first APIBF was organised in Singapore on the eve of the annual Asian Gaelic Games.

The inaugural APIBF was only possible due to the extraordinary effort of a range of people including members of the Irish Business Association of Singa-pore (Colin MacDonald, all at McCraic, Moira Lynam, Micheál and Sherry Collins and Declan McFadden), the Hong Kong Ireland Business Forum (Rob Agnew), Matthew Connolly in Tokyo, Angela Keane, Catherine Toolan and Margaret Ward in Beijing, Mick Shannon, Noel Lennon, Pat Gibbons (UCD), Barry O’ Brien (RCSI), embassies in the region, Enterprise Ireland (Michael Garvey, KB Lim) and the Asian County Board of the GAA (Paraic McGrath).

The early commitment by Dick Spring, FEXCO and former Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, to travel to Singapore to attend enhanced the credibility

and prestige of the day-long event. His participation made the task of approaching others to attend and speak a lot more manageable for the organisers.

Since that time, the APIBF has grown in substance and has become a feature of the annual Asian Gaelic Games. It has been hosted successively in Penang, Malaysia (2008), Bangkok, Thailand (2009) and Hong Kong, China (2010). The legendary Micheál Ó Muirc-heartaigh has been a regular feature at the APIBF and Asian Gaelic Games. Margaret Ward (RTE) and Clifford Coonan (The Irish Times) continue to be active supporters

On each occasion, in addition to the core APIBF team, the input of a small number of people has been instrumental to making the events a success – Jose-phine Evans and Brendan Lyons in 2008, Jerome Kelly, Liam O’Keeffe and Paul Scales in 2009, Pádraig Walsh, Conor and Susan O’Mara, Bill Condon, Paul Costigan and Rob Agnew in 2010.

Among the outcomes of the 2010 APIBF event in Hong Kong was a commitment to reach out to the Irish

business community to improve the awareness of Asia and to forge connections with the Irish business groups working in the region.

The GAA was hugely enthusiastic about the concept and the GAA President Christy Cooney was familiar with the APIBF work through his participation at the APIBF 2010 in Hong Kong.

The APIBF Conference at Croke Park on 17 June has been organised on a voluntary basis by a group chaired by Rob Agnew (Hong Kong) together with Conor O’ Mara and Padraig Walsh (also Hong Kong), Micheál Collins and Paraic McGrath (Singapore), Kieran Bren-nan (Vietnam), Paul Scales (Thailand) and Martin Murray and Peter Ryan (Ireland). Ronan King (HKBF), Peter Finnegan (IEA), Stephen Nolan (Green IFSC), Gary Palmer (IFIA) and Dr Tom Hardiman (Chester Beatty Library) also provided advice and support.

Following the event in Croke Park, the core APIBF team will co-ordinate with all stakeholders to finalise the details of a robust structure for the APIBF going forward, which will include the integration of a closer link with Irish-based business groups, including those which are partners for the 17 June event.

One tangible outcome of this exercise will be a structure to ensure that support is available for some of the APIBF spin-off events which have been added to the business calendar in Asia – events this year have included an event in Ho Chi Minh ahead of the South East Asian Gaelic Games, and another in Shanghai ahead of the All China Gaelic Games.

Details of the new APIBF structure will be formally announced at the fifth annual Asia Pacific Ireland Busi-ness Forum, which will be hosted by the Irish Chamber of Commerce, Korea in Seoul on Friday, 14 October.

The APIBF 2011 will be held on the eve of the 16th annual Asian Gaelic Games, which will take place in Suwon, South Korea on 15 and 16 October, hosted by the Seoul Gaels Gaelic Football Club.

The APIBF has been run to date entirely by voluntary effort with the generous support of a range of sponsors, in particular PCH International and Enterprise Ireland. The Irish embassies in the region have also been very helpful. Business & Finance provided valuable support for the event in 2009 and 2010.

Thanks especially are due to Liam Casey for his ongoing interest and support. Particular thanks are due to the Irish business groups in Asia Pacific and the Gulf, along with the GAA clubs and Asian County Board, which have enthusiastically adopted and supported this initiative from the outset.

AsiAn –GAA Five yeArs oF

support

The Asian Gulf Board (then the Asian County Board) of the GAA convened for the first time in April 2006 in Shenzhen, China. There were

seven people present in Peter Watson’s apartment including Paraic McGrath and Peter Ryan, who are still involved with the AGB.

Since that initial meeting the AGB has grown to a fully registered organisation within the GAA structure. There are nine executive members with 27 clubs and just short of 800 players fully registered.

Clubs are based in the Gulf and Arabian region, North and South East Asia and India. The number is made up of over 40pc ladies, with a total of 14 na-tionalities represented including Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Irish, English, Welsh, Scottish, American, Ca-nadian, Australian, French, Vietnamese, Malaysian, New Zealand and Thai.

The Asian Gulf Board is responsible for the or-ganisation of the annual Asian Gaelic Games with the 15th version recently taking place in Hong Kong. A number of other tournaments are run in the region annually including the All China, South East Asian, North Asian and the Gulf Games. The AGB has been supported by the Irish business groups, St Patrick’s social groups, agencies and embassies in the region.

The AGB now has four key partnerships with ESBI, Guinness, Kerry Group and PCH International. These relationships help the AGB to support games development in different countries, as well as supporting the regional events each year, and the partners’ contribution is widely appreciated and ac-knowledged. The AGB is also guided by the officers serving on the overseas committee of the GAA under the chairmanship of Joe McDonagh. This committee oversees the board’s activities and guides it in its ongoing affairs.

The AGB is very grateful to the founding officers of the Asian County Board and all of those club officers who have given and continue to give wholly voluntarily their time and expertise. People like Michael Shannon, Peter Goff, Helen Fridell and

Angela Keane have made immense contributions to the development of the games in the region.

With an audience of 150 delegates, the event was made up of formal presentations, panel discussions and focused industry sector workshops.

The mood of the APIBF last year was overwhelmingly of optimism, but not blind optimism or foolish hope with no grounding in reality.

One speaker noted that, on average, global GDP growth through to 2016 will be at 4pc per annum, and two-thirds of this growth will occur in emerging and developing countries.

The opportunity for Ireland is to provide the sup-port required to improve the productivity gains in emerging Asian economies.

Further cause for optimism, if actioned sensibly, is the prospect that Ireland can be a harbour for Asian outbound investment to Europe. Irish businesses in the asset leasing, financial services and technology sectors could soon find themselves the objects of interest from Asian investors.

The mission of any annual conference is to have delegates leaving it with a spring in their step look-ing forward to the future.

The APIBF is the annual conference of Ireland Inc in Asia, and the enthusiasm of the participants – from the podium to the delegates to the workshops – was infectious.

Asia is experiencing an extraordinary period of transformation, and the current circumstances in Ireland, if anything, gave urgency to the Asia strat-egy of the Irish Government.

In an energetic address this year, John Bruton, chairman of the International Financial Services Centre, stressed that the international leading posi-tion of Ireland in fund administration was of interest in all countries with developing financial services sectors, and could be used as a lever to increase Ireland’s profile and leading edge and as a magnet to draw investment flows to Ireland.

Opportunity in Asia was a recurring theme during the day’s proceedings. It sprang most prominently from the podium during the panel discussion where ambassadors from the Irish diplomatic missions in India, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines spoke about the business opportunities available in the emerging economies of Asia.

Of all the sessions during the event, this panel provoked the most discussion about untapped po-tential for Irish business and opportunities. It was a reflection of the diversity and range of opportunities across Asia. Perhaps a point to follow up in future events will be to explore in more depth, and give more time to, the opportunities that are available in the emerging economies.

Practical insights accompanied the lofty heights of

theory, particularly during Matthew Connolly of Eire Systems’ presentation. He highlighted the role of the APIBF as a grassroots project for self-empowerment of Irish businesses that will become a touchstone for businesses globally looking to Asia.

The tendency to self-deprecating modesty in the Irish character is often a positive; but in business, to recognise and shine a light on success is a necessary and noble act.

The Business & Finance Asia-Pacific Ireland Business Awards 2010 fulfilled this role by honour-ing luminaries who have already seen the light that shines so brightly in Asia. Those honoured – Tom Hardiman, Glanbia and Catherine Toolan – repre-sent the best of Irish business in every way.

The afternoon sessions involved focus groups on financial services, technology, food and education, and arising out of those sessions, there is an action

plan based on self-help principles to foster growth, collaboration and business in those sectors.

So what does it all mean? What can we distil from the day’s proceedings? The core messages seem to be:

l Asia will be the epicentre of future business opportunity in the world.

l Engagement with Asia is no longer merely a de-sire, but a practical necessity, and that message has been listened to by the Irish Government.

l There are Irish success stories throughout Asia that light the path that others must follow. That path leads not only to Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore, but also to the emerging economies of Asia.

l The key sectors for Ireland in Asia will contin-ue to be financial services, technology, food and

pharma, and education, though opportunities also exist in clean and green tech, and applying intellectual capital in consultancy services.

l There is a tried and tested network of Irish business support groups that can make market entry to Asia more readily understandable, and that is increasingly active, self-determining, and co-ordinated.

l The next challenge will be for Ireland to posi-tion itself to attract outbound investment from Asia to Europe – with key sectors to benefit in Ireland being asset financing, financial services and technology.

The Irish Network China (INC) is a not-for-profit organisation whose aim is to promote and encourage exchange and understanding

of business, cultural and sporting ties between the Irish and Chinese communities in Beijing.

The INC is driven by a shared passion – Ireland – and strives to help people of all nationalities feel at home in China.

Fiona Mc Cormack is currently the chairperson of the INC and has been a committee member for five years. She moved to Beijing in 2003 from her home town of Dublin. She works as an international school teacher at primary level and is an active member of Beijing GAA. She is glad to help anyone with any queries about living, working or looking for schools in Beijing.

From Co Mayo, Mark Godfrey looks after the INC’s website and media affairs. He has been in China for five years, working as a business journalist and re-searching a PhD on China’s presence in Central Asia.

Also from the West of Ireland – Co Sligo – Cath-erine Toolan works with ARAMARK and is executive director of the Olympic Catering Services Project,

responsible for managing the food service for athletes and media at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Three years in China (she previously studied at Tsinghua University, Beijing in 1999) Toolan spends her spare time playing Gaelic football with Beijing’s successful ladies’ GAA team, travelling in Asia and generally living life to the full.

INC stalwart Angela Keane serves as ‘general factotum’ on the Irish Ball committee, lending a hand as and when required. Born in Co Kerry, her career has been in media advertising in London where she worked for The Times, and in Singapore where she worked for Dow Jones.

Keane moved to China five years ago, having set up her own coaching and facilitation business. Outside of work, she is an active member of the ladies’ Gaelic football team.

Colin Saunders is responsible for driving the sponsorship efforts of the Irish Ball and has sat on the committee of the INC for the past year.

He moved to Beijing two years ago and in that time has worked in the PR and marketing industries, while also helping to promote Irish art in China.

The Ireland China Chamber of Commerce, Shanghai provides networking opportunities for Irish businesses and businesspeople, and has a strong relationship with the international Chambers of Commerce and Irish State bodies in Shanghai. Along with

other Irish groups in Shanghai, the Ireland China Chamber of Commerce, Shanghai works together with the Irish Consulate to ensure the success of Ireland Week in Shanghai.

The highlight of the 2010 Ireland Week was the St Patrick’s Day Parade on 13 March, which saw thousands of Irish, Chinese and international marchers and spectators take to the streets in what is a unique honour for the Irish community.

The parade, sponsored by the Ireland EXPO Pavilion, was led by Dr Sha Hai Lin, Shanghai’s Municipal People’s Government Deputy Secretary; Irish Government Minister Michael Finneran TD; and Haibao, the World Expo 2010 mascot.

The Ireland China Chamber of Commerce, Shanghai also has a dedicated LinkedIn Group. Its objective is to provide information-sharing opportunities relating to the Irish business community in Shanghai. T he Irish Chamber of Commerce of Hong Kong (ICC) is a networking group for Irish businesspeople living in Hong Kong, and those with an interest in Irish business.

It provides its members with the chance to further Irish busi-ness interests in Hong Kong, and with an opportunity to meet Irish Government and business leaders that visit Hong Kong.

Membership is made up of both individuals and corporations, and the chamber seeks to promote closer ties between Ireland and Hong Kong through regular events.

The ICC also represents the Irish business community on a broader level through membership of the European Union Cham-ber of Commerce, and of the International Business Committee – the forum through which the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region meets with the international busi-ness community to discuss key issues and legislation.

The chamber has around 125 members, the majority of whom are of Irish origin, with most of the remainder from Hong Kong, the UK and the US.

Its events attract a broader constituency and are regularly attended by some of the leading Irish, European and Chinese businesspeople in Hong Kong. They typically focus on entrepre-neurship, investment, finance or economic issues and attract high profile speakers. The ICC runs social and sports-related events as well, such as the flagship annual Rugby Sevens event.

The chamber also promotes events hosted by other organisa-tions – such as sister Irish chambers in Asia and fellow European chambers of commerce – with which it shares common aims and objectives.

Over the past two years, the ICC has significantly expanded its activities and membership and increased its focus on better serv-ing its members and their interests.

In the next two years, it hopes to substantially increase its membership, in particular by attracting younger members.

T he Malaysian Irish Business Network (MIBN) is an organisation whose purpose is to develop and foster trade, services, education and

investment between Ireland and Malaysia, while also offering a forum for the exchange of business views and experiences.

The organisation has the following objectives:

NetworkiNgThe activities of the MIBN include a mix of business and related social functions. Events organised by the MIBN include business luncheon presentations, semi-nars and dialogue sessions with relevant institutions. The social functions are a combination of informal gatherings and semi-formal events, designed to meet the needs of a diverse membership. These events will allow the development of good business contacts, not only within the Irish business community in Malaysia, but also with other foreign companies, Malaysian coun-terparts and government bodies.

The Irish Chamber of Commerce in Singapore was founded in 1992 as the Irish Business Association, and became a full chamber in 2010.

The objecTives of The chamber are:l To be an approachable network of qualified

business people and companies with a strong goodwill to Ireland;

l To provide access to a powerful network of relevant people and companies in Ireland, Singapore and internationally;

l To facilitate a network of formal and informal events and contacts to assist member’s busi-ness needs;

l To provide a forum for Members to discuss common interests regarding economic, indus-trial and commercial objectives;

l To assist in promoting trade, investment, finance, commerce and industry between Ire-land, Singapore and internationally;

l To represent and promote the views of Irish business interests to various external parties.

l To conduct, sponsor or promote any activity deemed to be of benefit to the members and the chamber.

The chamber welcomes enquiries from individuals or companies, of any nationality, with an interest in the development of business ties between Ire-land and Singapore.

With over 200 members, it runs frequent networking and informational events in Singapore. Members of Irish chambers and business groups from Ireland and elsewhere in the region are welcome to attend.

The chamber’s members are drawn from vari-ous business sectors, and it has three strategic groups, which focus specifically on: Financial Services; ICT and Food, Pharmaceutics and Life Sciences.

The Ireland Japan Chamber of Commerce (IJCC) was formally established in 2008, replacing the Japan Ireland Economic

Association (JIEA). The JIEA had been the representative body for Irish-Japanese business interests in Japan since its foundation in 1973.

Members of the IJCC represent a cross-section of companies, businesspeople and entrepreneurs from Ireland, Japan and other countries.

The chamber works closely with the Irish Embassy and other Irish Government organisations, and is also a member of the European Business Council, the trade policy arm of the European Chambers in Japan.

The IJCC carries out many activities for its members including:l Organising speaker events, seminars and

networking events in Tokyo and elsewhere.l Briefing sessions with Irish politicians and key

members from the business community.l Holding an annual golf competition and annual

business dinner.l Lobbying in support of enhanced Ireland-

Japan business and trade.l Providing a forum in which to raise issues of

interest to the Japan-Ireland business community.

The IJCC is a not-for-profit organisation managed by its members through a board of directors. The chamber also has a number of sectoral committees which focus on specific areas of interest to members.

The chamber welcomes applications for member-ship from any company or individual with an interest in the Japan-Ireland business relationship.

Membership is available in the following catego-ries: Corporate, Professional, Associate and Student. The IJCC also has a number of Platinum Partners who provide extra financial support to the work of the chamber.

The Asia Ireland Chamber of Commerce in Korea originated from the work of the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland in developing links with its Asian counterpart chambers

The representative organisation for Irish-related business interests in Korea, the Asia Ireland Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AICCK), was

launched in December 2003 in Seoul. It also serves as a regular business and social

forum. Membership is open to Irish companies and executives in Korea, Korean companies trading with Ireland and other parties whose interests coincide with those of the Irish business community in Korea.The AICCK originated from the work of the Cham-bers of Commerce of Ireland (CCI) in developing links with its Asian counterpart chambers. This resulted in a bi-lateral co-operation agreement being signed between CCI and the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry. AICCK was launched as a result.

The Chamber is honoured with the challenge of hosting the fifth Asia Pacific Ireland Business Forum

in Seoul on 14 October 2011, and looks forward to working with the other chambers in the region, business groups in Ireland and the GAA to ensure that this year’s event builds on previous fora and the Croke Park event in June 2011.

Business has become more of a focus for the St Patrick’s Society of Vietnam in the past year

The St Patrick’s Society of Vietnam was established in 2007 to bring the Irish community and friends together. The society is

dedicated to promoting Irish culture and supporting local charities. Events include a St Patrick’s Day celebration, Christmas lunch, golf outings and football tournaments.

The group has more recently adopted a focus on business activities. In 2010, in association with Enterprise Ireland, it co-hosted an Entrepreneurship Forum, which coincided with the visit of a group of Irish entrepreneurs to Vietnam.

The Irish Australian Chamber of Commerce’s members share a common bond through heritage or by doing business within the

Irish-Australian corporate community or in doing business across all of Ireland, Australia, Asia Pacific and Europe. Members join together to promote the economic and social cohesion of the Irish-Australian community.

The chamber seeks to introduce individuals and businesses to each other across Australia and also assists in introducing members to the international Irish corporate network and into Ireland. Likewise, the chamber welcomes enquiries from Irish busi-nesses seeking entry into Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

Over two decades the chamber has built up one of Australia’s largest non-sporting functions, with its annual St Patrick’s Corporate Event every March.

The Lansdowne CLubThe Lansdowne Club was formed in 1986 by a group of Irish born businesspeople living in Australia. At the time there were large numbers of professionally skilled Irish people taking up residence in Australia. There was no Irish business-orientated focal point for these new arrivals and this void was then filled by the Lansdowne Club.

From the beginning it was essentially a busi-ness network. It provided the newly arrived with a meeting place where they could relax with people who had shared and understood their experiences. Membership was drawn from the business world and therefore the common bond was further accentuated.

The club was built on a platform of one rule – membership was restricted to Irish born or Irish educated people living in Australia. In 1997 the committee, following consultation with the members, extended membership to non-Irish born or educated people while maintaining the essence of the club.

Non-Irish born or educated applicants may be pro-posed by four existing members and will be reviewed by the committee in order to determine the benefit that they can bring to the club.

At its members’ night in August 1997 the com-

mittee invited its first ‘new’ member, Chris Roberts, managing director of Arnotts Biscuits Limited, to join the club.

The club has developed a lot over the past 21 years. Today, many members hold significant posi-tions within the largest corporations in Australia, covering hundreds of industries.

Membership numbers are now close to 1,000 and are detailed in its publication The Lansdowne Club Directory of Irish Business Contacts in Australasia or within the directory pages of its website.

direCTorsWhen the club was established, there was no con-stitution and a committee was formed to organise events. Membership of the committee was by invita-tion and consequently the essence of the club was maintained.

The desire to be a part of the Lansdowne Club has grown over the years and committee members felt it important that it should expand its base. As a consequence it approached a shortlist of experienced and respected people who accepted the invitation to join the committee.

Around this time it also felt prudent to form an association under the NSW Department of Fair Trading Act. This necessitated the formation of a board and a constitution. The role of the board is to provide support to the club. The board ensures that the mission of the club is maintained and it also provides guidance for future direction.

A committee was appointed by the board to oversee the management of the club’s affairs. This includes the maintenance of member information and the website, and the organising of events.

An independent auditor was also appointed, re-porting to the board. Care is taken not to accumulate funds beyond those required to ensure the orderly management of the club’s activities as the club is not a profit-orientated organisation and exists purely for the benefit of its members. Basically, it provides a friendly, enjoyable and open forum for Irish and Australian businesspeople to socialise and network together.

Since it started in 2003, the Irish Thai Chamber has been going from strength to strength, furthering mutual interests in business and culture

The Irish Thai Chamber was first registered with the Ministry of Commerce in Thailand in March 2003. It was the brainchild of Gerry Doyle who,

together with Liam O’Keeffe-Ayudhkij, wanted to raise the profile of Ireland in Thailand and help those wish-ing to pursue trade and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Doyle and O’Keeffe-Ayudhkij approached Jerome Kelly, Matthew Brennan and other Irish expatriates living in Thailand for their support and encouragement.

The project received impetus later in the same year with the first ever visit of an Irish president to the kingdom of Thailand. President Mary McAleese paid a private visit there prior to her state visit to Malaysia, and attended the luncheon at which the Irish Thai Chamber was officially launched in the Grand Hyatt Erawan on 27 September, 2002. The first chairman was Liam O’Keeffe-Ayudhkij.

In June 2003, the chamber arranged a visit to Ireland by the Thai ICT Minister Dr Surapong Suebwonglee, accompanied by a delegation of 30 high profile Thai businessman and government officials. In October 2004, it helped Enterprise Ireland host an Irish delegation from universities throughout Ireland, which participated in a Thai government-sponsored educational fair in Bangkok. The chamber was up and running.

Today, it is becoming more and more active in the Irish community and continues to expand its role

both in Irish-Thai relations and in European-Thai relations, furthering mutual interests in business and commerce, tourism, education, sports culture and art. A highlight for the chamber was the hosting of the third Asia Pacific Ireland Business Forum on the eve of the Asian Gaelic Games in 2009. The cham-ber is still a young organisation but growing fast.

The Ireland India Business Association (IIBA) was founded in May 2008 to enhance and increase commercial links

between Irish and Indian businesses. The IIBA fosters knowledge-sharing and networking among Irish and Indian business communities.

The association provides an online member-ship database and regular networking events, bringing together Irish and Indian businesses for the purpose of exploring opportunities and making contacts. The newsletter for members contains updates on the Indian economy, trade information and news of IIBA events. Members will be invited to meet with visiting trade groups from India, as well as to participate in trade visits to India.

IIBA membership is open to public and private sector organisations, ranging from large corpora-tions and government agencies to small and

medium enterprises, as well as individual profes-sionals and students.

Members include successful Irish companies representing all facets of the business community such as accountancy firms, bankers, consultants, distributors, exporters, hi-tech companies, life science firms, legal advisors, manufacturers, mar-keting firms, trade specialists and various others.

The association maintains close relationships with embassies, government agencies, the diplo-matic corps and industry bodies, and showcases the opportunities to the Irish business community through an active programme of events nation-ally. For more details visit www.iiba.ie.

The EU ASEAN Business Council is a senior level peer network of transnational EU firms with significant economic interests across

the ASEAN region. It serves as an interface for the EU institutions that seek the views of business at regional and country level in ASEAN, as a business interface for the emerging ASEAN institutions them-selves, and as a group policy access facilitator for EU business with the EU institutions and individual ASEAN governments.

It is facilitated through collaboration between the European chambers of commerce in ASEAN whose senior members are typically transnational EU firms, and leaders in their sectors. The council enables a critical mass of industry players to meet in group format with policy-makers and receive and deliver feedback on critical issues through dialogue and discussion.

The council began when, in response to a call from Surin Pitsuwan at the 2010 Europe Day celebration lunch in Singapore for the creation of such a council, I called for a meeting of the European chambers of commerce in Singapore on 1 November, where we agreed a road map of collaboration to create the council and open our country-based sectoral groups at regional level, and to create a network of senior-level EU business peers. I then met with senior staff from DG TRADE in Brussels to explain our vision and garner their moral support, which was readily given.

The response from firms has been extremely posi-tive, with EU leaders in regional business including automotive, finance, ICT and logistics enthusiasti-

cally becoming members of the council. At the inaugural EU ASEAN Business Summit in Jakarta, where the Commissioner for Trade, Karel de Gucht, met with selected council members and formally endorsed its creation, the finance and economy min-isters of the ASEAN region referred to the council as an important step forward, and support for it was one of the seven recommendations by business to the government afterwards.

The EU is by far the largest source of FDI and one of the largest trading partners in ASEAN collectively and most individual countries.

ASEAN is a region of 600 million people with widespread use of English, extraordinary untapped resources and a diversified economic and political landscape. It has strong respect for intellectual property, offering overall regional stability and low risk in comparison to the larger but more monolithic China economy. While ASEAN integration is not as advanced as the EU, it is advancing rapidly in recent years and the EU is its major investor.

The council will become the most important voice of EU business in ASEAN, and will also raise the profile of ASEAN in the EU. The region has stunning potential for development and the EU is well placed to take maximum advantage of this potential through partnership.

It should be noted that the growing importance of the China market for ASEAN means that the EU offers a low risk and friendly trading and investment partner alternative to China to the ASEAN region, and the same is true for the reciprocal relationship.

Much is to be gained from closer collaboration.

The inaugural AGM for the newly fledged Irish Business Network (IBN) was held at the Emirates Towers Hotel in March 2011,

attracting up to 100 of its members and ensuring a full quorum for the group whose first order of business was to elect its first full committee.

The AGM was graced by the presence of HE Cia-ran Madden, Irish Ambassador to the UAE; Saeed Y. Alnajjar, senior executive, external relations, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCC); and Jim Mongey, regional manager – Middle East and North Africa, Enterprise Ireland.

The new IBN committee is headed by Brian King, general manager consumer products division, Jashanmal, who has been involved with the group’s steering committee which came together initially in 2010. During the AGM, King outlined the objectives of the IBN which are:

The IBN is committed to hosting regular meet-ings which include participation in trade visits and delegations and dedicated industry gatherings.

“We want to be an active and relevant business group here in the UAE,” said King. “There are many active Irish businesses already supporting the Dubai economy who want to develop their business interests here. It is therefore important that we have an official body through which business experiences can be shared.”

This is the first official Irish business council to be set up in Dubai and is registered with the Dubai Chamber. The Dubai Chamber currently has a total of 39 business councils and 24 business groups under its auspices, which represent a vast cross section of the business community.

The MBS Asian Business is a one-year full time programme awarded by University College Cork (UCC) and delivered in part-

nership with Nanyang Business School at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore and the Farmleigh Fellowship.

This groundbreaking academic programme com-bines study at UCC and Nanyang Business School with a work-study scholarship programme involving Ireland’s leading companies.

Students spend three months in Ireland at UCC and a total of 28 weeks in Asia. This involves intensive study at NTU and 16 weeks working with leading Irish companies and organisations in various locations across Asia.

During their time in UCC students work on gaining a broad understanding of the fundamentals of Asian culture, politics, economics and business, which prepares them for their work experience in a multicultural Asian environment.

These modules are delivered by the School of Asian Studies – College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, in co-operation with the Faculty of Commerce and the Department of Management and Marketing – College of Business and Law.

Nanyang Business School is consistently placed at the top of world and Asian rankings. For the MBS Asian Business it delivers modules in Singapore, which provide the candidates with the best current practices for doing business in Asia.

Having completed the course at NTU and busi-ness placements in Asia, students return to UCC for final workshops and presentations.

The Farmleigh Fellowship is a not-for-profit or-ganisation based in Singapore, which aims to develop a critical mass of highly skilled professionals with a profound understanding and first-hand experience of business in Asia, and who will spearhead greater business engagement between Ireland and the Asian region.

This pilot programme is co-funded by a partner-ship between the Irish Government and industry and is supported by IBEC. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition at UCC and NTU, return flights to Singapore, international health insurance and visas.

OmanThe Irish Business Network in Oman provides a platform for members to network with each other. It allows for the regular exchange of trends and ideas from different industry categories, for making business connections and often times finding employment opportunities. In 2008 I graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a honorary Bachelor degree in Business and Economics. I was selected for the Export Orientation Program by the Irish government afterwards and worked with a HR software consultancy first in their Irish office and then for six months in their HQ in Hamburg, Germany.

After the completion of the program I moved to Buenos Aires where I continued work for the same company before moving back to Ireland in December 2010 to start the Farmleigh Fellowship after having applied in September 2010. I have wanted to do a masters in business for a while and was looking for the right school and opportunity. When the Farmleigh Fellowship started its advertisement campaign it naturally was of high interest to me with its focus on Asia and a long stint abroad.

Of course the practical aspect made it even more appealing and the executive MBA classes we will be attending in Singapore will make it a challenging and rewarding experience.

I want to gain an understanding of Asian business culture and hope to become either a regional expert or a country expert in the industry which I will work in as part of the Fellowship.
