AP SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE Instructor: Sr. O’Donnell
Location: Room 121
Office hours: Before school zero period by appointment TBA throughout the day
Course Overview
AP Spanish Language and Culture emphasizes advanced language skills across the three modes of communication
with the goal of mastering speaking, reading, listening, writing and vocabulary recall in preparation for the AP
Spanish Language and Culture Exam in May. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish by both instructor and
student [CR1]. This course expands upon one’s previous knowledge of Spanish. Oral communication will be
conducted on a daily basis to strengthen listening comprehension, pronunciation and conversation skills. Grammar
and vocabulary will be emphasized heavily. Additionally, Hispanic culture will be an integral part of the course as
it is an integral part of the language [CR7}. Other areas of study in the course include various literary [CR2c] and
non-literary readings (in print and online resources) [CR2b], debates, Hispanic films, geography, history and
current events in the U.S. and Hispanic world. We will also utilize various web casts and pod casts to enhance
listening skills [CR4a]. Overall, the AP Spanish Language and Culture course emphasizes the use of language for
active communication. Since it is a college credit course (equivalent to junior year) it will be conducted as such
and students will be exposed to college level experiences, requirements, procedures, etc.
Required Materials
1. Three ring binder
2. Writing portfolio: Three – pronged folder with pocket to hold writing samples
3. Textbook 1: Una vez más (issued by school)
4. Textbook 2: Triángulo aprobado, 5a ed., Gatski and McMullen (purchased in September)
5. Spanish/English – English/Spanish dictionary
Attendance
Class attendance is crucial to foreign language proficiency. Attendance includes punctuality, attentiveness,
cooperation and active participation (for which you will receive a grade, se appendix 1). The student must be in
class on time, no unexcused tardiness is permitted. The student is responsible for any work missed due to absences.
The student must turn in missed work within one day of returning to class unless other arrangements are made.
Tests and quizzes must be made up within three days of the student’s return to class. Failure to do so will result in
a zero. More time will be given for special circumstances (ex. lengthy illness, injury, etc.). Tests and quizzes are
to be made up in the LAC (the Learning Assistance Center which is located adjacent to the Library).
Tests and Quizzes
There will be weekly quizzes and 2-3 tests per quarter. The tests have AP style sections such as interpretive
communication with print and audio texts, interpersonal and presentational writing and interpersonal and
presentational speaking. There will also be a midterm. The midterm is given during January exam week and it is a
full length AP – style exam. There is also a speaking and writing portfolio that serves as the final project that is
worth 1/5 the final grade that will be done after the exam.
Evaluation Tests: 20%
Quizzes : 20%
Homework/Compositions/Diary: 20%
Projects/Presentations/Speaking: 20%
Participation / Cultural Contact: 20%
Progress reports
Progress reports will be sent home at the five week point of each marking period for students who are failing or
have a 10 point drop from their previous average.
2
Homework, Writing and Projects
Homework will be assigned every night and is due at the beginning of class. Homework will be graded at times on
effort of completion and other times on performance. The homework’s will consist of, but not be limited to,
grammar exercises in Una vez más, AP exam style exercises in Triángulo: Aprobado 5th ed. such as reading
comprehensions with and without visuals, listening activities with and without visuals as well as other materials
drawn from various literary and non-literary print sources. Students will also keep a speaking and writing portfolio
that will be used for interpersonal as well as presentational speaking and writings that are in the style of the
interpersonal and presentational speaking and writing sections of the AP language exam and will be graded
according to AP exam rubrics. There will be 1-2 projects/presentations per quarter, which will require students to
listen, read, write and speak in order to strengthen skills necessary to have success on the AP exam. All
assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of class on the due date. Failure to complete assignments on time
will result in detention and reduction of the grade.
Speaking Speaking is a crucial aspect to success in the course and on the AP exam. If you are not committed to speaking
Spanish and hearing Spanish spoken (i.e. functioning in Spanish) in class then you are in the wrong class
[CR1]. Each student will sign a contract to speak Spanish when they are in class, to all persons, not just the
teacher. Failure to do so will result in reduction of the participation / speaking grade. In addition to daily
conversation in class and speaking exam days, each student must complete TWO speaking assignments per
marking period. The speaking assignments are the same format as the interpersonal and presentational speaking
sections on the AP Language exam and they are graded according to the AP rubrics. These are to be done outside
of class during zero period tutoring or during special project or reading days in class. A separate speaking
schedule will be handed out to students.
Supplemental assignments
During every quarter each student must complete SIX supplemental assignments on their own outside of class for
each you will receive a grade. In addition to the two aforementioned speaking assignments done with me, each
student is to choose TWO listening assignments [CR2a] and TWO reading assignments [CR2b] from the list of
authentic sources in the supplemental assignment section on the next page of this syllabus. For both the listening
and the reading assignments, the student is to write a brief summary (100 – 150 words) of what s/he listened to or
read in addition to creating at least five key questions to ask about what s/he listened to or read. The questions must
be analytical and not repetition of basic information (like what is the name of the person in the article). Questions
must also be accompanied by answers. Three of the six (one speaking, one reading and one listening) are due in the
fourth week of the marking period and the last three are due in the eighth week. Students are encouraged to hand
in the supplemental assignments before the due date. At the end of each marking period each student must pick one
of the sources s/he chose and give a two-minute presentation on it to the class. The purpose of the supplemental
assignment is twofold: 1) to give the students more exposure and practice to AP exam style exercises outside of
class and 2) to expose them to a college – like experience where they are responsible to do the work on their own.
Real Life Language and Cultural Contact
In person or online, students must participate in one Cultural Contact each marking period. Options include but are
not limited to: attending an art exhibit, musical show or play; preparing a meal while following recipes written in
Spanish; regular correspondence through email, Skype or Face Time with heritage speakers in a Spanish-speaking
country; viewing of important events involving target language speakers, such as a president’s acceptance speech or
a national celebration of a country’s independence; and visits to university campuses for special events, hosting a
student from a Spanish-speaking country; visiting area businesses and learning about opportunities with Spanish;
and more. Students must provide acceptable evidence of their engagement [CR9].

Course Planner
The course is divided into thematic units which are further based on recommended contexts and guided by essential
questions. Corresponding cultural elements are integrated into the study of the units, and activities are directed
with those cultural connections in mind. Again, discussion of the topics completely in Spanish is a requirement for
this course [CR1]. It is assumed that students have previously been exposed to advanced language structures in the
courses leading up to the AP Spanish Language and Culture course; however, review of the mechanics is done
within the contextual framework of each unit as needed.
The six themes are:
1. Families and Communities / Las familias y las comunidades
2. Personal and Public Identities / las identidades personales y públicas
3. Science and Technology / La ciencia y la tecnología
4. Global Challenges / los desafíos globales
