Real Sociedad EspaÇola de QumicaPrizes 2015

The Real Sociedad EspaÇola de Qumica (SpanishRoyal Society of Chemistry) has recently honoredseveral outstanding chemists in its annual prizeprogram. We feature the awardees here.

Jos Luis MascareÇas (Universidad de Santiagode Compostela; USC) is the recipient of the“Medalla de Oro de la RSEQ” (Gold Medal ofthe RSEQ), which is the societys highest honor.MascareÇas studied at the USC, where he workedwith Antonio MouriÇo and Luis Castedo for hisPhD (awarded in 1988). From 1989–1990, he was apostdoctoral researcher with Paul A. Wender atStanford University, and in 1991, he joined thefaculty at the USC (with research stays in 1992 and1995 with Gregory L. Verdine at Harvard Univer-sity), and is currently Professor of Organic Chemis-try. MascareÇas and his group are interested in bothmetal-catalyzed processes and also the develop-ment of DNA- and protein-binding peptides. Hehas reported in Angewandte Chemie on rhodium-catalyzed annulations.[1] MascareÇas is on theEditorial Advisory Board of ChemBioChem andthe International Advisory Board of the AsianJournal of Organic Chemistry.

The “Premios a la Excelencia Investigadora”are given for outstanding research achievements, and have been awarded to Nuria Lpez, ConcepciRovira, Kilian MuÇiz, Rubn Martn, and FlixZamora.

Buchwald at the Massachusetts Instituteof Technology (2005–2008), he was made groupleader at the ICIQ in 2008 and professor at theICREA in 2013. Martns research is primarilyfocused on the catalytic activation of carbondioxide and unreactive CH, CC, and CObonds. He has reported in Angewandte Chemie onnickel-catalyzed CC bond cleavage.[5] Martn is onthe International Advisory Board of the EuropeanJournal of Organic Chemistry.

Flix Zamora (Universidad Autnoma deMadrid; UAM) received his PhD in 1994 forwork supervised by Carmen Navarro-Ranningerat the UAM. After postdoctoral work with Bern-hard Lippert at the University of Dortmund andwith Michal Sabat at the University of Virginia, herejoined the UAM, where he is currently ProfesorTitular. Zamoras research is focused on thepreparation and characterization of novel materialsat the nanoscale level. He has reported in Chemis-try—A European Journal on imine-based covalentorganic frameworks.[6]

Roco Ponce Ortiz, Moiss Gulas, Julio Lloret-Fillol, and Carlos Mart-Gastaldo are the winnersof the “Premios Sigma–Aldrich a Jvenes Inves-tigadores RSEQ”, which are awarded to early-career researchers.

Roco Ponce Ortiz (Universidad de Mlaga;UMA) studied at the UMA, where she wasawarded her PhD in 2008 for work supervised byJuan T. Lpez Navarette. From 2008–2011, she wasa postdoctoral researcher with Tobin J. Marks atNorthwestern University, and she subsequentlyreturned to the UMA where she currently holds aRamn y Cajal Fellowship. She is co-author of areport in Chemistry—A European Journal onethylenedioxythiophene–vinylene oligomers.[7]

Moiss Gulas (USC) studied at the USC,where he completed his PhD (supervised byJos L. MascareÇas) in 2006. From 2007–2009, hewas a postdoctoral researcher with Matthew Gauntat the University of Cambridge, and in 2010, hereturned to the USC as a Parga Pondal Fellow.Gulas is interested in topics such as the develop-ment of new methods based on the activation ofunreactive bonds with metal catalysts.
