It was previously demonstrated that fibroblasts subjected to hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment manifest behavior resembling subversion by, or collaboration with, the tumor cells [13, 14].

Fibroblasts under hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment seem to be subverted by, or collaborate with, the tumor cells [13, 14].

Oxygen‐starved non‐cancer cells are manipulated by their cancerous neighbours.

Finish the abstract with a reminder of thenovel insight in the context of its wider implications and applications.

This means that both the implications and the applications should be wider (than thecore topic of the paper).

But what if the paper is only about basic research, and doesn’t mention any applications yet?... We need, within the same sentence, to distinguish implications from applications…

Commas are not optional pause marks for effect… They separate concepts and clauses, thereby defining semantics (particular

meaning).

The second brood is produced in a new burrow while the first is raised in the original burrow.

What was intended?

The second brood is produced in a new burrow, while the first is raised in the original burrow.

i.e. this is not describing temporal overlap, but a different situation. Clarity is achieved by using “whereas”, in which case, comma sensitivity disappears:

The first second brood is produced in a new burrow whereas the first is raised in the original burrow.

First five sentences:Among the vicissitudes incident to life no event could have filled me with greater anxieties than that of which the notification was transmitted by your order, and received on the 14th day of the present month. On the one hand, I was summoned by my country, whose voice I can never hear but with veneration and love, from a retreat which I had chosen with the fondest predilection, and, in my flattering hopes, with an immutable decision, as the asylum of my declining years — a retreat which was rendered every day more necessary as well as more dear to me by the addition of habit to inclination, and of frequent interruptions in my health to the gradual waste committed on it by time. On the other hand, the magnitude and difficulty of the trust to which the voice of my country called me, being sufficient to awaken in the wisest and most experienced of her citizens a distrustful scrutiny into his qualifications, could not but overwhelm with despondence one who (inheriting inferior endowments from nature and unpracticed in the duties of civil administration) ought to be peculiarly conscious of his own deficiencies. In this conflict of emotions all I dare aver is that it has been my faithful study to collect my duty from a just appreciation of every circumstance by which it might be affected. All I dare hope is that if, in executing this task, I have been too much swayed by a grateful remembrance of former instances, or by an affectionate sensibility to this transcendent proof of the confidence of my fellow-citizens, and have thence too little consulted my incapacity as well as disinclination for the weighty and untried cares before me, my error will be palliated by the motives which mislead me, and its consequences be judged by my country with some share of the partiality in which they originated.

George Washington, 1789My fellow citizens, I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our Nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have now taken the Presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet every so often, the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.

An important cognitive principle:

• Put something important and new at the beginning.

• Put something important and new at the end.

• Don’t make the middle part longer than necessary as background information for your intended readership.

Therefore, in an abstract:

Wiley Researcher Academy

Don’t begin like this :-)

We show that skt-1 is the key regulatory factor inthe signal transduction pathway that causes boneto grow in response to mechanical forces.

Optimal structure of an abstract

The mechanoreception signaltransduction pathway (MSTP) begins with a G-protein complex that senses forces ofcompression, tension and shearing in the actincytoskeleton of osteoblasts…

The discovery that skt-1 controls theresponse of bone growth to mechanical stress haspotential implications for accelerating bone repairby directly intervening in the MSTP at this point.

Wiley Researcher Academy

Online text presents challenges

compared with paper…

As reviewed in: Ferris Jabr: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/reading-paper-screens/

Reading experiences from a screen compared with paper:

• Less intuitive navigation of long texts• Less “satisfying”• Requires more mental energy

Understanding and memory of texts read from a screen compared with paper:

• Less deep understanding• Less long-term memory• Slower recall of facts• Roughly equal short-term memory• Harder to remember where particular elements of an article are

Wiley Researcher Academy

Ease of cognitive map-making

seems to be more

important

medium

…The findings implied that it is not the materiality of the presentation medium that influences reading outcomes, rather it is the extent to which the text presentation facilitates, or impedes, the reader's ability to construct a cognitive map that influences the reading process…
